Garrett County Gran Fondo set for Saturday, June 17

MCHENRY — Cyclists are getting ready for a wild ride through the scenic wonders of the Deep Creek Lake area and mountain Maryland.

The 12th annual Garrett County Gran Fondo fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, and is presented by Garrett Trails Non-Profit.

“Everyone from casual cyclists to experienced athletes will participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with ride lengths varying from 25-125 miles,” said Josh Spiker, Executive Director of Garrett Trails. “From the stunning views of the mountains to the small-town culture at each stop, riders will get to experience all that Garrett County has to offer.”

The participation of hundreds of cyclists supports local trail initiatives led by Garrett Trails, including advocating for more trails that serve people of all abilities, equal access to public land and connecting communities with hiking and biking paths.

Spiker noted that these challenging routes will take riders through some of the most picturesque spots in the county. Along the way, riders will experience crossing the Youghiogheny River twice, full-service aid stations located in small towns from Friendsville to Barton, and seven timed climbs that will challenge even the most fit athletes.

The timed climbs include some familiar to local residents, including Bowman Hill, Dry Run Road from Savage River Reservoir and Michaels Road climbing for over four miles from Barton.

“We are excited to offer this unique opportunity for cyclists to explore and experience what makes Garrett County so special,” Spiker said. “The Gran Fondo is not only an intense physical challenge but also a great way to explore our beautiful home.”

Riders are reminded that the fundraiser is not an overall race, and to observe all traffic laws.

“We’re grateful for the many people that chose to support us by registering for the GCGF,” Spiker said. “We want everyone to have a great ride and get home safe, and we have all the routes posted at www.garrettcountygranfondo.org. It’s a good resource for drivers to see where they may encounter groups of cyclists this Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.”

Garrett County Hospice celebrates 40th Year

Brodak’s Banquet Hall, May 18 – Hospice of Garrett County, a vital institution serving the community for four decades, celebrated its momentous 40th anniversary with a remarkable event. Sponsored by WVU Medicine-Garrett Regional Medical Center and the dedicated staff of Hospice of Garrett County, the evening at Brodak’s Banquet Hall brought together over 100 attendees to honor this milestone achievement.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed special guests, including two founding members of the Executive Committee, Pauline Faucett and Alice Vitez-Sisler. Faucett served as treasurer, while Vitez-Sisler held the position of secretary. Their pioneering contributions laid the foundation for the organization’s success.

Prominent physicians integral to the mission, Dr. Margaret Kaiser and Dr. Dan Miller, were also in attendance. Dr. Miller received recognition for his unwavering commitment as the medical director for an impressive 28 years. Their dedication and expertise have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s impact on the community.

Reflecting on the organization’s humble beginnings, Hospice of Garrett County Executive Director, [insert name], emphasized the transformation from a group of passionate volunteers with a vision to enhance the lives of Garrett County residents suffering from life-limiting illnesses to a fully operational entity in 1983. This transition was made possible by the unwavering determination and selflessness of the “go-getters” who led the charge.

The celebratory evening was further enhanced by live music from the talented Steve Smith Band. Attendees were treated to delicious food catered by Sweitzer’s BBQ, and several exquisite quilts were generously donated for a silent auction held during the event.

Moreover, a significant announcement was made by current Board President Ernie Gregg and his wife Terri. The couple generously donated a parcel of land located at Alpine Lake Resort, which will be made available for sealed bids. Detailed bid packages can be obtained from the Hospice offices in Oakland and McHenry.

Spectacular Fireworks Display Set to Light Up Deep Creek Lake: Where to Catch the Best Seats and Event Timings Revealed

Deep Creek Lake, a picturesque destination nestled amidst the mountains, is all set to host a breathtaking fireworks display. This eagerly anticipated event promises to be a visual extravaganza, captivating audiences with dazzling pyrotechnics against the backdrop of the majestic mountain range. As anticipation builds, eager spectators are wondering where to secure the best seats for this upcoming fireworks fire on the mountain.

Fireworks will light up the sky above Marsh Mountain at Wisp Resort overlooking Deep Creek Lake on July 4th. The display is set to begin around 9:30 pm and is set off from the tubing hill at the Mountain Park.

Deep Creek Celebrates its 98th anniversary

Deep Creek is celebrating its 98th anniversary this year, and its impact on the area has been felt for almost a century.

Deep Creek’s History

Deep Creek Lake is Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, covering 3,900 acres and 65 miles of shoreline. The man-made lake got its start in 1925 as the result of an effort undertaken by the Youghiogheny Hydro Electric Corp. to harness the power of Deep Creek, a tributary of the Youghiogheny River. Large swaths of land were purchased; a 1,300-foot-long impoundment dam was constructed to stem the flow of water in Deep Creek; and thousands of trees were removed from the area to be flooded. In addition, 15 miles of primary and secondary roads were relocated.

With Deep Creek sealed off, the expectation was that at least six months would be required for the lake to fill. But, boosted by heavy rains and snowfall, the process took only a couple of months. On May 26, 1925, the hydroelectric plant kicked into service, with water from the lake transported to the powerhouse through a 7,000-foot tunnel.

As the years passed, the area’s fishing and boating prowess became well-known to visitors from Pennsylvania. Residents of the Baltimore/Washington population centers also found the area to be a convenient getaway place, especially after interstate highways were built. Among the last of these was Interstate 68 — the national freeway — a major transportation route that arrived in 1991 and further opened up Western Maryland to tourism, commerce and more.

Today, 1.4 million visitors each year take advantage of the limitless recreational options offered in and around the Deep Creek Lake area, creating their own Deep Creek experience.

Deep Creek Lions Club Boat Auction

The Lion’s Club at Deep Creek is auctioning a plethora of boats, as well as kayaks, sailboats, jet skis, deck boats, and speed boats on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Auction is open to all and will begin at 9 am at the Lion’s Club Park on 1249 Bumble Bee Road in McHenry, MD.

Funds for the auction will benefit blind skier and other community programs.

Garrett County Road Closures

Glendale Road will be closed to traffic in both directions from the Route 219 entrance to Zeddock Miller Road beginning June 14 through the first part of August.

The Glendale realignment is an ongoing project to remove a curve in the road and provide entrances to the northern and southern portion at the front of Glendale Road.

To access the south end of Glendale Road, please follow the detour signs: Take Sand Flat Road, to Paradise Point Road, to Zeddock Miller Road. This detour will allow access to all restaurants, businesses and homes on Glendale Road.

Note, Glendale Road from Route 495 to Zeddock Miller Road will remain open. Signage will be posted on Md. 495, US 219 and Glendale Road.

GRANTSVILLE — The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close and detour the eastbound I-68 (National Freeway) ramp to US 219 (Chestnut Ridge Road) (Exit 22) in Grantsville during daytime hours Monday, June 5, to Friday, June 9, weather permitting.

Signs will be in place to assist drivers in navigating the detour. Contractor Excavating Associates of Hyndman, Pennsylvania, also will use detour signs, portable message signs and arrow boards to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

The State Highway Administration understands that lane closures and detours are inconvenient, but the work is needed to maintain a safe and reliable transportation system.

Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, pay attention to reduced speed limits, as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.

Encountering a bear in Deep Creek

“The best way to be proactive to minimize the chances of having an encounter is to remove any and all food attractants from your property or the community. When these bears fill up in backyards, they’re looking for food, unsecured trash, BBQ grills.”

The reason for seeing so many bears is because the bear population is growing. Breeding season occurs from June through July, and bears breed on a two-year cycle. The young ones get displaced and they have to find their own place.

“They’re just out trying to find an area where a big male bear won’t beat them up,” Eyler states.

Residents can see bears all across Maryland, especially in Garrett County.

DNR says- “We don’t relocate bears. If a bear gets into a situation where it absolutely can’t find its own way out, we will do that. But we prefer to allow the bear to find its own way out of situations.”

It’s very difficult to trap them because they move quite a distance. It’s very rarely the same location unless there’s a good food source. For us to try and trap one, the success rate isn’t really high.” Elyer adds.

DNR adds people in Garrett County live with bears every day, with generally no problems.

Other tips listed on the DNR’s website include:

Don’t panic. Don’t shoot! Don’t approach. Don’t feed!
Make the bear aware of your presence by talking in a firm voice
Ensure the bear has an escape route, so give it space, and keep domestic animals away.
Back away slowly with your arms raised up to appear large.
Have all people and pets go inside to wait for the bear to leave.

Remember to never intentionally feed bears. It’s illegal in Maryland, and it is dangerous for you and the bear.
