52nd-annual Autumn Glory Festival king & queen announced

OAKLAND — The 2019 royalty court has been selected for the 52nd annual Autumn Glory Festival.

This year’s king is Sam Kennedy, and the queen is Cheyenne Reckart.

Kennedy is a member of the Southern Garrett High varsity baseball team and participates in cross-country. He is involved with Model U.N. and 4-H, has competed as a mathlete, and volunteers with the Blind Skier program. Kennedy is a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and his hobbies include hunting and boating.

Annual Autumn Glory Festival set for October in Garrett County, Md.

McHenry, Md. — Garrett County, Md., celebrates the 51st anniversary of its annual Autumn Glory Festival, presented by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, with two large parades, live music, band competitions, antique and craft shows and more from Wednesday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 14.

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Autumn Glory Kickoff Dinner will kick off the festival on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Thursday features the Oktoberfest dinner and a fireman’s parade.

The Official Maryland State Banjo and Mandolin Championships is at 7 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade, features more than 100 entries. That day also will feature the Western Maryland Tournament of Bands at 6 p.m.

Fall Foliage and Festival Report October 14 – 15

Welcome to the Fall Foliage and Festival Report for the weekend of Oct. 14 and 15, brought to you by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Office of Tourism.

Garrett County’s biggest event of the year, the Autumn Glory Festival, is underway in Oakland and other locations throughout the county. Highlights of the festival include the Maryland State Banjo and Fiddle Championships, Tall Tale Storytelling and Book Festival, Western Maryland Tournament of Bands, parades, a 5K Run, and an authentic Oktoberfest celebration.

For those heading out to the event, the fall foliage will certainly not disappoint! Reports from the region indicate leaf change has really picked up in Garrett County, moving rapidly towards peak with lots of yellow and orange showing. Recent rain did bring a lot of leaves down over the past weekend. Red and sugar maples and hickory species, with their colorful pinkish orange and yellow foliage, are looking pretty good in the county at Big Run State Park, along New Germany Road to Grantsville and east along I-68 to Frostburg. In Allegany County good color change can easily be seen on ridges near and far.

50th year of Autumn Glory Festival begins next week

OAKLAND — Garrett County’s autumn splendor is gracefully arriving just in time for the 50th annual Autumn Glory Festival, which is set to begin next Wednesday, Oct. 11. Guests from all over either travel or return home to the mountain this time of year to take in the sights and sounds of fall.

The Glorious Harvest Farmers Market & Craft Show will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and be open various hours Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Mtn. Fresh Pavilion at Oakland Town Parking Lot. A sale and glassblowing demonstrations will be offered daily at Simon Pearce, Mtn. Lake Park. The Cove Run Farms Corn Maze will open Wednesday by appointment, then with a different schedule daily.

The traditional Autumn Glory Kick-off Reception will be held Wednesday evening beginning at 6 p.m. at the Ag Heritage Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHenry. Autumn Glory royalty will be crowned and several honors and awards will be given throughout the evening.

Garrett Co. Arts Council To Host 38th Annual Heritage Craft Fest

Autumn Glory Festival’s longest running art and craft show, the Heritage Craft Fest, will be hosted for the 38th year at Broad Ford Elementary and Southern Middle schools. This juried show is organized by the Garrett County Arts Council. Its proceeds benefit the many programs of the local arts community.

More than 60 quality art and craft vendors will be present on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14, at the Harvey Winters Road locations. This established event is always a popular part of the festival. Artists from six states will be located in the cafeteria and gymnasiums of both schools.

A wide variety of products will be available for purchase, including pottery, photography, paintings, baskets, floral designs, up-cycled art, furniture, quilts, wood working, knives, jewelry, fiber arts, quilling, children’s books and soaps.

Autumn Glory photo contest deadline nears

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 50th Annual Autumn Glory Festival with a photo contest open to all photographers.

The winning photo of the county’s fall foliage/colors will be published as the cover of the Autumn Glory Festival brochure. The photographer will be recognized at the Autumn Glory Kickoff Reception with two complimentary tickets.

Photo entries must be postmarked by March 31. Winners will be announced on the chamber website, www.visitdeepcreek.com, by May 31.

All entries must be original photographs taken within the past two years. Photos must be a vertical shot.

Entries may be submitted via email to jen@garrettchamber.com or via thumb drive or CD/DVD to Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541.

There is a limit to 10 photos submitted per photographer.

The entry should include photographer’s name, phone number, email, mailing address, and location and approximate date of photo.

Photographers release the rights to the chamber to use their photograph in print or online media with photograph credit if possible.

Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours Begin in Garrett County

MCHENRY, Md. – The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is announcing the 2013 Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours.

Officials say the tours include some of Garrett County’s most scenic routes. This year the chamber is offering two fall foliage tours.

Officials say the Fall Foliage Heritage Tour highlights include the Mountain Lake Park, Broadford Lake Park, Kitzmiller, Shallmar and Loch Lynn Heights, Mt. Nebo WMA. The extended tour includes New Germany State Park, Monroe Scenic Overlook, Deep Creek Lake State Park and Discovery Center and Finzel Swamp Nature Preserve.

Fall Foliage Forecast: Best Chance for Vibrant Display in Mid-Atlantic

As summer comes to a close and fall weather ushers in the changing of leaves, this year’s most vibrant display of foliage will occur across the mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, surrounding regions may be hindered by flooding rain and unseasonable temperatures.

“Most important is really what happens at the end of September and beginning of October into the middle of October. That’s really the crucial period,” according to Dr. Marc Abrams, professor of Forest Ecology and Physiology at Penn State University.

Abrams began observing how weather conditions affect fall foliage more than 25 years ago.

The AccuWeather.com 2013 Fall Forecast predicts near-normal temperatures and precipitation for the mid-Atlantic region, allowing bright, colorful leaves.
