Children's pastor celebrates 25 years of teaching in Loch Lynn

LOCH LYNN — Children attending Loch Lynn Church of God have been learning from children’s pastor Brenda Bernard for 25 years.
Over those years, she has taught many classes, directed VBS, went on camping trips, served as a counselor at church camp, had overnight lock-ins, went roller skating, ice skating, sled riding, horseback riding and on picnics.
She traveled with children and families to Ocean City for youth conventions, held movie nights, GLOW Nights (a Halloween alternative) and directed Christmas programs and other children’s musicals.

Tourism-related revenue continues to grow in Maryland

McHENRY — Maryland tourism was the topic of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Before Hours last Tuesday morning at Wisp Resort. About 50 local officials and business owners attended the networking event.
“This was the fourth year of revenue growth in the state of Maryland,” reported guest speaker Liz Fitzsimmons, managing director of the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts for the Maryland Department of Commerce. “So we want to keep that trajectory going.”
Her division’s mission, she said, is to grow revenue for the state to benefit its citizens.

Rotary Satellite Club raises $2,000 for 'It's in the Bag

OAKLAND — The Oakland Rotary Satellite Club, operating in partnership with the Oakland Rotary, raised $2,000 for the “It’s In The Bag” weekend and holiday backpack food program at a fundraiser in October.
The event was hosted at Smoke & Mirrors and included food and beverages and a silent auction.
“A special thanks to Dave Bruffy for donating use of the gallery, Scott Alexander for providing live music, and others across the community for their generous donations to the silent auction,” said Amy Bortz.

Garrett County schools perform well on new state report card

OAKLAND — The Maryland State Department of Education released a new accountability report card for every school in the state of Maryland last week, designed to measure the success of schools and identify areas for improvement.
The report card was developed in response to the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act, a federal law that seeks to ensure public schools provide a quality education for all children.
The Maryland Report Card is designed to measure school success in several ways, including state tests in English language arts and math; postsecondary readiness; progress of English learners in achieving English language proficiency; graduation rate; and students with access to and earning credit for a well-rounded curriculum.
