Volunteers are being sought for the second cleanup of Rt. 46 from the Robert W. Craig Campground to Elk Garden, W.Va., at Jennings Randolph Lake, which is situated between Garrett County and Mineral County, W.Va. The cleanup is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, beginning at 9 a.m.
Volunteers are to meet at the gazebo in the Howell Run Picnic Area. The group will start cleaning from both the campground and Elk Garden simultaneously, so everything will be downhill, according to Ranger Norm Dennis, coordinator of the project. He noted that as this is the second cleanup this summer along this same stretch of road, there should be far less trash then the first volunteers encountered.
“The cleanup will probably last about 2½ hours, depending on the number of volunteers we have willing to help give us a hand,” Dennis said. “The Friends of Jennings Randolph Lake really need a good turnout to get the job completed in as little time as possible. Your help will be greatly appreciated by all of the local residents and visitors to the lake by projecting a positive image of the local area.”
Beverages will be provided during the entire cleanup effort. At the end of the project, a barbecue will take place at the gazebo for all volunteers who helped.
Anyone wishing to volunteer can contact Dennis at the lake office at 304-355-2346, or by e-mail at norm.dennis@usace.army.mil, or persons may simply show up at the gazebo Saturday morning.

U.S. foreclosures fall in July -RealtyTrac
NEW YORK | Thu Aug 11, 2011 12:01am EDT
NEW YORK Aug 11 (Reuters) – The number of U.S. homes that received foreclosures filings fell to a near four year low in July, a survey said on Thursday.
Notice of default, auction sale or bank repossession were sent to 212,764 properties in July, the lowest number since November 2007, real estate data firm RealtyTrac said.
That represents a 4 percent decrease over June and a 35 percent decrease over last year.
“The downward trend in foreclosure activity has now taken on a life of its own,” James Saccacio, CEO of RealtyTrac, said in a statement. The robo-signing controversy last year, which forced banks to slow the pace of foreclosures, plus government programs to help struggling homeowners stave off repossession may explain the drop, he said.

Keyser, W.Va. — For the News Tribune
KEYSER – Minco Records recording artists Thunderhill are proud to announce the release of their new double-CD album, “Local Legend: 1963-2011,” due out on Saturday, Aug. 13.
The album release party, featuring a performance by the reunited band, friends and family, will take place that day at the world famous Honi Honi Bar in Deep Creek, Md.
The 55-song collection documents the entire 48-year history of the legendary band, from its beginnings as the award-winning ’60s folk trio The Thunder Hill Singers through their heyday as a top-drawing country comedy act in the West Virginia and Maryland areas during the ’70s and ’80s, ending with their recent, wildly popular reunion shows in the 21st century.

Parking Lot Will Be Ready For Fair Week, Says Roads Department Superintendent

Aug. 4, 2011
The Garrett County Roads Department has been busy working on the parking lot area at the fairgrounds in McHenry, general roads superintendent Jay Moyer indicated during a departmental update report for the county commissioners on Tuesday. He also reviewed paving projects and discussed adoption of an entrance permit policy with the officials.
“The bottom line is that the parking lot will be ready for use the week of the fair,” Moyer said. “So that should squelch any rumors that the fair is going to be canceled because the parking lot is not ready.”
A five-acre area was excavated for the lot, with about 18 inches of top soil removed. A local contractor then donated 12,000 cubic yards of suitable sub-base material and approximately 2,000 cubic yards of Grizzly base stone was laid over the area.
About 2,000 cubic yards of CR6 stone will be spread over the parking lot prior to the 55th annual Garrett County Agriculture Fair, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, through Saturday, Aug. 20.
In addition, 27 bases were installed for future lighting and five storm water collection inlets were constructed.
“There’s definitely a lot of work yet to be done,” Moyer noted.

The winning continues for archer and Garrett County native Jesse Broadwater, now a resident of Jennerstown, Pa., who returned from a highly successful stint in Yankton, S.D., this week. His trip resulted in two USA Archery National Championship titles, a new world record, a gold medal, and the Easton Award, which is presented to the compound archer placing highest in the USAA National Indoor, USAA National Field, and USAA National Target Championships. To top it all off, he also won a brand new Ford Mustang. The car is the third that Broadwater has won from the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). Hoyt reported that Broadwater has achieved the most successful two weeks ever for any pro shooter. Following his silver-medal performance at the World Championships in Torino, Italy, at the end of July, he traveled to South Dakota, where he took first place in the USAA Field Nationals, first place in the NFAA Field Nationals, first place in the USAA (NAA) Target Nationals, first place in the Hoyt World Open (with a $10,000 prize), and then won the World Outdoor Archery Festival Car Shoot-Off against dozens of pro and amateur shooters. He was also named National Archery Association shooter of the year.

Interim Superintendent Presents School Facts, Figures To Garrett County Officials

Aug. 4, 2011
Interim school superintendent Sue Waggoner presented an update report on Garrett County schools to the county commissioners on Tuesday. She presented a wide variety of facts and figures pertaining to past and upcoming school years in such areas as pupil services, finance, transportation, food service, and special education.
“Engaging Students to Reach Their Potential” is this year’s theme, Waggoner noted. With that in mind, local teachers, principals, and other personnel have been preparing for the upcoming session, which begins on Aug. 24.
She noted that nearly 6,000 educators from across the state recently participated in a staff development academy at Mountain Ridge High School in Frostburg. More than 60 local Board of Education employees took part in that event, including principals, office personnel, and reading and math teachers.
The BOE will hold an “academy” for new principals on Aug. 9 and 10 and an orientation for new teachers on Aug. 17. Waggoner noted that there are 10 new hires for fiscal year 2012. But a total of 29 positions have been eliminated: 19 at the elementary level, four middle school, five high school, and one central office staff member.
In addition to human resources, Waggoner presented facts in the following areas:
Pupil Services
• Character Education programing has had a positive effect on local schools, according to Waggoner. A local school is recognized annually by the state; the 2011 school was Yough Glades Elementary.
• Total enrollment this year (FY ’12) is expected to be 3,945, which is a loss of 139 students compared to the last school year.
Finance
• With regard to Garrett County per pupil wealth, it is estimated that the county’s assessable real property base will decline by .4 percent for the fiscal year 2013 state aid calculation cycle; however, the state average may contract by 6.20 percent. As a result, Garrett’s wealth could decrease by approximately .33 percent in FY ’13, compared to the state average’s contraction of 4.39 percent.
• The enrollment loss of 139 students, or 3.4 percent, will likely be the highest of any district in the state.
• The above factors could result in a per pupil wealth increase of 3.19 percent for Garrett County and a 4.47 decrease for the state’s average, which could lead to a reduction in state aid of $2,445,608.
• Based upon the estimated data, Garrett County may pass Queen Anne’s and Anne Arundel counties in FY ’13 to become the fifth most wealthy county in the state on a pupil basis. (The county is currently ranked at seventh.)

A dazzling sight can be found along the west side of Rt. 219 in Pleasant Valley right now, as thousands of sunflowers have opened their wide faces and turned to the sun. The August warmth seems embodied in the waves of gold, spreading across the acres, up and over the sloping hills. It’s but one of so many lovely sights on the mountaintop at this time of the year, as farmers’ hard work comes to fruition, and the Earth brings forth its bounty. Photo by Fabian Green.

Contractors are seen here giving the new Liberty Mews housing facility a final sweep before its grand opening, which took place today. The town homes, located off Liberty Street in Oakland, are the most recent project of the Garrett County Community Action Committee. The project consists of 36 homes, 10 two-bedroom units approximately 1,930 square feet and 26 three-bedroom units approximately 2,289 square feet. Three of the units are handicapped accessible. The town homes are designed to mimic old world English mews, with appointed private porches and second-level terraces that face a cobblestone laden village courtyard and “carriage” garages.
