Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Announces 2014 Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours
The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, is pleased to announce the 2014 Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours.
Travel along some of Garrett County’s most scenic routes. Enjoy spectacular fall foliage, panoramic vistas, historical landmarks, museums and stunning natural features. This year, the Chamber is offering two Fall Foliage tours. The Fall Foliage Heritage Tour Highlights include: Friendsville, Friend Family Museum, Youghiogheny Lake, the Cove, Schoolhouse Earth, and Meshack Browning’s grave. The Extended Tour Fall Foliage Highlights include: Bloomington Viaduct, Savage River, Monroe Run Scenic Overlook, Barn Quilts and Historical Markers and Mountain Maryland Scenic Byway.

Deep Creek 2014 Set To Host United States National Championship of Adventure Racing
Deep Creek 2014 in collaboration with the United States Adventure Racing Association is excited to host the 2014 Adventure Racing National Championships here in Deep Creek Lake, MD on October 2-4.
The National Championships will be a 30 hour long unsupported expedition style endurance race based exclusively on strategic wilderness navigation. The race is comprised of mountain biking, long distance trekking and flat water paddling. There is no course and only a time limit of 30 hours to navigate to as many points as possible between the start line and the finish line.
The AdventureSports Institute, coached by Todd Copley, will be fielding a team in their quest for the Collegiate National Championship. ASI won the National Championship in 2007 and the team is anxious to bring the title back to the epicenter of adventure sports, Garrett County.
Summit Adventure Racing Team, locals Eric Lapp, Joey DiSimone and Todd Copley, will be looking to better their third place finish from last year’s Nationals. The team is currently ranked the #1 team in the North American Adventure Racing Points Series.

Hydrilla Update
“Attached are 2 maps. The first map indicates the location of 2 new areas where Hydrilla was identified by DNR staff during the comprehensive Deep Creek Lake survey conducted the week of September 15, 2014. The new locations are near Sorbus Lane, and 4-5 small patches of Hydrilla near Thousand Acres Road. The second map indicates the locations of all Hydrilla identified by DNR in 2013 and 2014.
DNR staff will treat the newly identified small patches of Hydrilla on Monday, September 29 with herbicides. The 4-5 patches that are in close proximity with each other near Thousands Acres Road will be treated as a block of about 2-3 acres. The remaining treatment will be approximately 1/10 acre total near Sorbus Lane.

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) are moving forward with the US 219 I-68 to Meyersdale Project Planning Study. The US 219 I-68 to Meyersdale Project Planning Study was recently reinitiated after it was put on hold during the economic downturn in 2007.
The US 219 I-68 to Meyersdale Project intends to improve the economic development potential along US 219, roadway linkage between I-68 and the Meyersdale Bypass, safety of motorists, and level of service by providing safe and efficient access. Deep Creek 2014: Spectators flock to Western Maryland for Olympic atmosphere
Ryan jumps around on the concrete lining the Adventure Sports Center International course in an U.S. Soccer jersey and matching bandanna and American flag face paint. He watched all of this summer’s World Cup and plays soccer, but this is his first time watching slalom canoe or kayak.
When asked which he enjoys more, international soccer or international kayaking, the 7-year-old finally stops moving and takes a few seconds to answer. “Kayaking,” he decides, and goes back to playing on the grass and the tiered seating area.
His mom, Cathy Witt, is impressed that a day at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships near Deep Creek Lake had such a quick impact on him. Witt saw a posting on Facebook about a world championship just 45 miles from their home in Cumberland, Md., and figured it was worth checking out.
“I figured it’s a once in a lifetime thing, being here and watching it,” she said. “It has an Olympic-feel, and the kids are really into the Olympics so for them to be here and in this type of atmosphere.”

David Florence: Up Deep Creek with a paddle
Edinburgh canoeist David Florence believes he is peaking at the right time as he prepares to defend his two world slalom titles at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland this week.
The double Olympic silver medallist struck gold in the C1 singles and C2 doubles in Prague last September and recent form suggests that the 32-year-old is well capable of producing a repeat performance in America.
Florence was a close second in this summer’s World Cup C1 singles standings after winning in London and finishing second in Prague and Augsburg and he confirmed: “I’ll take confidence from my performances. I’ve had a really good season, even though you always want it to be better. Winning in London [at the Olympics] was fantastic and the season steadily built as it went along. I couldn’t ask for any more.”
His old rival, Slovak legend Michal Martikan, pipped him to the overall World Cup title by just 15 points, but Florence feels there is no clear favorite this week.
