Even in making their own snow, ski slopes relying on Mother Nature
“…..Wisp Resort in Garrett County is holding its official season opening Saturday, and while Whitetail Resort and other Pennsylvania resorts have opened sporadically so far, they hope to stay open for good starting Saturday — if the weather cooperates.
“It’s an industry that is a bit of a guessing game and a bit of a gamble,” said John McCracken, a spokesman for Wisp Resort. “Even though the meteorologists say one thing, it could do a totally different thing.”

Area ski resorts open for winter season
Wisp, Seven Springs, Ski Roundtop, and Ski Liberty and Whitetail all opened Friday.
The people who run the ski resorts said the extreme cold and the combination of natural and man-made snow helps them create and maintain a solid snow base.
“The day after Thanksgiving is great for us, and we’ve done it two years in a row, so we’re really happy about that,” said Roundtop Mountain Resort spokesman Chris Dudding. “This probably happens once every five or six years, so having it happen two years in a row is great.”
The parking lot at Pennsylvania’s Ski Roundtop was packed Friday.

Let it snow (please?): Ski resorts hoping the rest of winter is more wintry
Sunday, February 05, 2012
By Lawrence Walsh, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Unseasonably warm weather across the Midwest and Northeast this winter has dealt a blow to local and regional resorts for the first half of the snowsports season, delivering less natural snow and sustained snowmaking temperatures than in most years.
Still resort officials at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Wisp and Holiday Valley are staying the course, making snow at every opportunity and offering all-inclusive, money-saving packages to fill rooms and slopes.
And they’re crossing their fingers for more “normal” winter weather for the rest of the season.

Deep Creek Lake welcomes ski season
Posted: 12/03/2010
MCHENRY, Md. – Maryland’s only ski resort is preparing to open its doors.
Wisp Resort says the Deep Creek Lake region received several inches of snow Thursday and Friday, combined with plummeting temperatures that allowed for three straight days of snowmaking.
Wisp will open a beginner trail on Saturday and Sunday, with reduced-price lift tickets of $10 for adults and kids.
The grand opening is set for Thursday, and more terrain is expected to be open by then.
Wisp celebrates its 55th anniversary this year and will provide several discounts next weekend,
including $7 lift tickets on Dec. 12 and 13.
