First responders, helicopter crew rescue injured mountain biker

Cumberland Times-News

GRANTSVILLE — A man riding a mountain bike on a remote New Germany State Park trail was rescued by first responders and a Maryland State Police helicopter crew after he became stranded following an accident Wednesday.

According to state police, Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department and other rescue personnel found the injured 56-year-old around 5:30 p.m. on the Meadow Mountain Trail, which stretches through New Germany State Park and Savage River State Forest in Garrett County. He reportedly told rescuers he was stranded in the woods for nearly eight hours.

Rescue personnel requested Trooper 5, based at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport in Wiley Ford, West Virginia, for an aerial hoist mission due to the mountain biker’s remote location, topography, an extended extrication time and the nature of his injuries.

Garrett County rescue personnel provided patient care and stabilized the biker.

Once overhead, the crew from Trooper 5 used the helicopter’s hoist to lower a trooper/flight paramedic into a clearing below. The trooper/flight paramedic, with assistance from rescue personnel, secured the injured mountain biker and he was lifted about 100 feet in the air and flown to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, for treatment.

The injured man’s name was not released and there was no word on his condition Thursday.

New Germany State Park Receives Donation of 100 Trees

by kking

Savage River Watershed Association helps replace trees lost to Hurricane Sandy

Savage River Watershed Association donated more than 100 red spruce trees to New Germany State Park to replace some of the many hemlocks lost during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The trees were planted along the banks of Poplar Lick Run, a native Brook Trout stream that flows from New Germany Lake to Savage River.

“New Germany was one of many areas that sustained extensive damages during Hurricane Sandy,” said Park Manager Erin Thomas. “We’re very grateful for the support of the Association’s volunteers who understand the importance of protecting and restoring this valuable habitat.”

Brook Trout are Maryland’s only native freshwater trout species and require relatively pristine conditions for survival. They typically cannot survive when water temperatures exceed 68 degrees Fahrenheit, which means that maintaining tree cover along the stream plays an important role in supporting a healthy Brook Trout population.

Poppy Seed-Sized Beetle Threatens Livelihood Of Md.’s Aging Hemlock Trees

GARRETT COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)—They are some of Maryland’s oldest living things.

Alex DeMetrick reports that despite centuries of growth, the state’s old growth hemlocks are being threatened by an invasive bug the size of a poppy seed.

You have to get off the main road at New Germany State Park in Garrett County to reach those performing a kind of tree triage. Only in this case the medicine is pesticide.

“The chemical will be released into the tree slowly through the injectors,” said Donnie Oates, Maryland park ranger.

Deep Creek Lake, M.D.
Adventure’s Doorstep

While Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland is 3,900 acres in size, and the lake in Herrington Manor State Park has 53 acres of water, the lake in New Germany State Park is barely 13 acres. However, the lake is not really what I want to tell you about. Rather, it is the wonderful time you can have in the woods in New Germany during the winter. The park’s 10 miles of pathways follow old roads or have been built, for the most part, on gentle grades to ease the way for cross-country skiers. This means that it is possible to glide about all day long and have barely more than 800 feet in total vertical rise, a very easy outing for such mountainous terrain. In addition, if conditions are right, park personnel groom and track the routes to make the skiing even more pleasurable.

Three bear carvings donated to park

Cumberland Times News

NEW GERMANY — Visitors to New Germany State Park are sure to see a bear this season — or at least a bear carving. The park now features three unique wood carvings, all donated to the park by local artist John “Sacco” Carter. Sacco and his son, Christopher, used a chainsaw to create the carvings, which range in size from four to seven feet tall.

“Sacco is an extremely talented artist,” said Ranger Erin Thomas. “We are honored that he chose to donate his work to New Germany State Park.”

Sacco, who is originally from Colorado, started carving about 10 years ago when he received a chainsaw for Christmas.

“I believe that wood carving is a gift,” said Sacco. “I donated the carvings to New Germany because I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to Garrett County and the many people who have made a difference in my life.”

The donated carvings can be found at the park entrance and at the ranger station. Additional carvings, also created by Sacco, are available for purchase at the New Germany gift shop, located inside the ranger station.
