Mortgage applications see biggest increase in 4 months

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Applications for home mortgages surged last week, racking up the biggest increase in four months on a flood of refinancing demand as interest rates remained low, an industry group said on Wednesday.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity, which includes both refinancing and home purchase demand, spiked up 15.5 percent in the week ended July 15. It was the largest increase since early March.

“Ongoing turmoil in the financial markets primarily due to the sovereign debt crisis in Europe has brought mortgage rates back to their lowest levels of the year,” Michael Fratantoni, MBA’s vice president of research and economics, said in a statement. “Refinance applications have surged in response.”

The MBA’s seasonally adjusted index of refinancing applications soared 23.1 percent, but the gauge of loan requests for home purchases dipped 0.1 percent.

Home purchase loan demand up as rates hit record lows

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. mortgage applications for home purchases rose for a second straight week, with demand at its highest level since early May as potential homeowners took advantage of record low interest rates, data from an industry group showed on Wednesday.

Demand for home refinancing loans, however, slumped for a fifth straight week as tight lending standards and a weak labor market prevent many homeowners from taking advantage of rock-bottom rates.

The Mortgage Bankers Association on Wednesday said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage applications, which includes both purchase and refinance loans, for the week ended October 1 decreased 0.2 percent. The four-week moving average of mortgage applications, which smooths the volatile weekly figures, was down 3.0 percent.

U.S. mortgage demand up for third week as rates drop

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Demand for U.S. home loans rose last week for the third straight week as mortgage rates fell to a one-month low and stoked refinancing, an industry group said on Wednesday.

Borrowers are rushing to take advantage of low borrowing costs and other incentives while they last.

The Mortgage Bankers Association’s index of total home loan applications rose 9.1 percent in the week ended January 15 to 575.9 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The increase was driven by a 10.7 percent jump in the refinancing index, while home purchase demand rose 4.4 percent to 223.0 last week.
