David Florence: Up Deep Creek with a paddle
Edinburgh canoeist David Florence believes he is peaking at the right time as he prepares to defend his two world slalom titles at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland this week.
The double Olympic silver medallist struck gold in the C1 singles and C2 doubles in Prague last September and recent form suggests that the 32-year-old is well capable of producing a repeat performance in America.
Florence was a close second in this summer’s World Cup C1 singles standings after winning in London and finishing second in Prague and Augsburg and he confirmed: “I’ll take confidence from my performances. I’ve had a really good season, even though you always want it to be better. Winning in London [at the Olympics] was fantastic and the season steadily built as it went along. I couldn’t ask for any more.”
His old rival, Slovak legend Michal Martikan, pipped him to the overall World Cup title by just 15 points, but Florence feels there is no clear favorite this week.

Fall Foliage Forecast: Exceptional Year in the Offing for Northeast
Leaf-peepers, get set: Experts say the summer season has set the stage for potentially exceptional fall colors in the Northeast, though the weather through mid-October will ultimately determine how stellar of a display will emerge.
The Northeastern states have had a good to excellent growing season without any major disturbances, according to Dr. Michael Day, University of Maine research professor of Physiological Ecology.
“In addition, adequate precipitation and lack of wind disturbances has resulted in trees with an exceptional amount of foliage still attached,” he said.
Slight drought stress in the late summer helped to signal a seasonal change but did not force an early leaf drop.
The upcoming weather will play a critical role.

America's Best Towns for Fall Colors
Oakland took top honors as the best town in America for leaf-peeping, thanks primarily to the blazing colors found just nine miles north of town at Swallow Falls State Park. As the Youghiogheny River flows through rock gorges, the oldest stands of eastern hemlock and white pine—more than 360 years old—blanket the area in gold, orange, and red. For five days in early October, residents turn out for the annual Autumn Glory Festival, including two parades, concerts, and band competitions. Oakland also embraces the Halloween spirit, hosting a hayride along the lakefront that passes scenes of zombies and ghosts.
