Committee asks public for ideas on energy development

Angie Brant

Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — The Mountain Maryland Energy Advisory Committee is soliciting ideas from the public.

“Great ideas fuel our future,” said committee chairman Mike Koch at Tuesday’s Garrett County Commission meeting. Koch also serves as the county’s executive director of Community Planning & Development. “Energy development is an important part of our economic future, but we need to chart our course thoughtfully and responsibly. Public participation diversifies ideas and deepens this dialogue.”

The committee was created in November to advise the Garrett and Allegany County commissioners on local and state policy, regulation, programs and legislation issues. Representing a diversity of perspectives, the 12 committee members are private citizens, and business owners and leaders in economic development (Garrett and Allegany County representatives), health, education and recreation.

Members are interested in all types of energy production, opportunity and projects in the area, with a key focus on identifying and mitigating any risks, said Jeff Simcoe, committee consultant.

The committee has explored a range of energy topics and generated numerous ideas on energy production. The 12 committee members will be broken down into four groups of three and each group will focus on either commercial biomass generation, solar or energy efficiency, according to Simcoe. While the three initiatives are slated for more focused review, the group seeks additional fresh ideas from the general public.

New ideas generated by the committee and local citizens will be explored during monthly committee meetings, all of which are open to the public. The committee will review viable solutions and forward recommendations by majority vote to the county commissioners. The ideas will be numbered so they can be tracked throughout the process and the committee will prioritize the ideas, according to Simcoe.

Drilling vs. Renewables – Md. Debate Over Energy Mirrors National Fight

Fracking is on hold and offshore wind legislation failed to pass.
By Ellen Stodola
April 13, 2012

ANNAPOLIS – Republicans and Democrats are at odds in the General Assembly over whether Maryland should pursue offshore wind or natural gas fracking as a way to improve the state’s energy output.

Neither option has been approved, with offshore wind failing to pass in the General Assembly for the second year in a row, and fracking on hold while a commission studies environmental and health concerns.

The debate ultimately breaks down to many Republicans pushing for the cheaper, more immediate drilling solution, while many Democrats argue for the greener, more long-term answer to the question of what Maryland’s energy future will look like.

It’s a Maryland-sized version of the national battle, between those who favor “drill baby drill,” mostly Republicans, and those who favor renewable energy sources, mostly Democrats.

Energy company gives $250K to group headed by O'Malley

Exelon trying to buy BGE parent company

The energy company trying to buy the parent of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. gave $250,000 last quarter to the Democratic Governors Association, led by Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, according to a report released Monday.

Made June 20, the contribution by Chicago’s Exelon Corp. was the largest donation the governors group received in the first half of 2011, the organization’s midyear Internal Revenue Service report indicated.

Exelon gave to the Democratic organization, whose current chairman is Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, because of its demonstrated support for “sound energy policy,” said Exelon spokesman Paul Elsberg.

“Exelon’s contribution supports the Democratic Governors Association’s national energy policy symposium series taking place across the country,” he said.

Western Maryland wrestles with energy future

By Timothy B. Wheeler, The Baltimore Sun

While Maryland’s energy future might lie in harnessing the breezes off Ocean City, the frontier for now is in the same place it’s always been — in the mountains of Western Maryland — where the region’s winds and coal and natural gas reserves are drawing prospectors.

That’s unsettling to some environmentalists and Western Marylanders, who fear the impact of new and traditional energy development on the region’s rich natural resources, its outdoors-oriented tourist industry and its rural quality of life.

Maryland’s first two industrial-scale wind “plants” are on the verge of generating power atop the state’s highest mountain in Garrett County. Though their construction stirred concerns over harming rare bats and disturbing forested vistas, a new string of them is being planned for another ridgetop.
