State suspects hot weather in Deep Creek Fish kill

MCHENRY, MD. — Scientists say hot weather may be behind the deaths of about 500 fish at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland.

The state Department of the Environment said Thursday that high air temperatures this month warmed the lake’s surface and created ideal conditions for an infestation of parasitic microorganisms that affect the gills of certain cold-water fish.

The agency says the fish kill is affecting mainly cold-water species such as yellow perch, walleye, smallmouth bass and northern pike.

Environmental regulators and the state Department of Natural Resources are still collecting and analyzing water and fish samples. They say they won’t know for sure what caused the kill for several weeks.

Hundreds of dead fish found in Deep Creek Lake

Megan Miller
Cumberland Times-News

— DEEP CREEK LAKE — The mysterious deaths of hundreds of fish in Deep Creek Lake have prompted an investigation by state environmental officials and a warning to lakegoers to avoid all contact with fish carcasses.

As of Thursday afternoon, approximately 200 fish had been found dead in and around the lake, in what Maryland Department of the Environment spokeswoman Dawn Stoltzfus called “a localized, sustained fish kill.”

“At this time, no evidence suggests a threat to human health; however, visitors and residents are advised to avoid touching, swimming with, or coming into close proximity to any dead fish,” MDE officials stated in a news release.

Stoltzfus said the first dead fish began appearing Saturday.

The cause and exact location of the fish kill is still unknown. It appears to have occurred in the deepest part of the lake, Stoltzfus said, because most of the dead fish have been large adults. Shallower waters do not seem to be affected, at this point.

Many fish have washed up on the beach in the Green Glade Cove area, but that could be due to the direction the wind blows off the lake.

“Where they’re ending up isn’t necessarily where the fish kill is happening,” she said.

The majority of the dead fish have been yellow perch, but walleye, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, largemouth bass, bluegill, chain pickerel, Northern pike and crayfish carcasses have also been found.

MDE and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have launched an investigation into the cause of the fish kill. Investigators will conduct water quality, carcass and fish feces testing, and a diagnostic analysis of affected species.

On July 11, an electrical malfunction at a pump station caused 42,000 gallons of sewage to overflow along the shore of the lake, near the intersection of U.S. Route 219 and Lake Shore Drive. But Stoltzfus said investigators have not yet found evidence that points to any specific cause for the fish kill, including the sewage spill.

Fish kills are a very unusual occurrence at Deep Creek Lake. MDE only has record of one other such incident, in 2004, in which an individual reported 78 dead yellow perch. When investigators arrived at the lake, they did not find any fish carcasses or any evidence that pointed to a cause for a fish kill.

People who find dead fish in the lake area or have information about anything that could have contributed to the ongoing incident should contact MDE at 443-482-2732.

Spies on acid – Obscure CIA & Deep Creek Lake reference

Beginning after World War II and escalating through the early 1950s, the U.S. government launched a multimillion-dollar series of experiments in mind control and behavior modification.

It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that Americans learned of such programs, which went by the names of Bluebird, ARTICHOKE and, most notably, MK/ULTRA. That’s when a commission led by then Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and a subsequent Senate investigation revealed what our government had been up to…..

…”Almost everything that I wrote about,” he responds, but the words are specifically a quote from Olson. “He came home from the Deep Creek Lake meeting where he was dosed with LSD nine days before his murder, and his wife knew something was wrong, and the only thing he would say to her was that he had made a terrible mistake and he said he’d speak to her later about it… The event at Deep Creek Lake was really his interrogation using drugs and probably LSD to find out with why he was talking about Pont-St.-Esprit and other experiments. He had decided to leave the CIA and the Army and re-school himself as a dentist, but Olson was an arrogant, outspoken sort of guy, and the last two or three months before his departure he started talking about what he had done over the past three years under contract with the CIA, and that was just a no-no.”

Pump station malfunction blamed for sewage spill

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — An electrical malfunction at a pump station caused 42,000 gallons of sewage to overflow near the shore of Deep Creek Lake early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Garrett Highway (U.S. Route 219) and Lake Shore Drive at about 7 a.m. Sunday, according to Linda Lindsey, director of Garrett County’s Department of Public Utilities.

Lindsey said electricians are working to determine the cause of the malfunction, which is unclear. An electrical short apparently prevented a generator from supplying backup power to the pumps.

“This was very unusual,” she said. “This does not happen on a regular basis.”

Access to the spill area was restricted and the area was disinfected, Lindsey said. A public service announcement was broadcast on the radio to notify the public of the hazard.

The county also notified Maryland Department of Natural Resources officials of the spill.

The area remained restricted as of Tuesday afternoon. Lindsey said officials will conduct daily testing and water-quality monitoring there until e. coli counts fall to acceptable levels.

Those counts have already declined significantly, she said.

The county health department recommends that people avoid swimming in that area of the lake until it is cleared, Lindsey added.

More on the fireworks from the Republican

Support the Republiucan Newspaper! It’s only $9.95/year for the online edition!

Jul. 8, 2010

In many locales, the skies above Garrett County were filled with fireworks over the July 4th holiday weekend, to the delight of thousands of residents and visitors, and pictured above is a “behind the scenes” look at what is involved in presenting such a display. Milton Proudfoot, Oakland, who has been a fireworks shooter for over 40 years, is shown preparing some of mortars that sent 597 individual shots of fireworks into the sky above Broadford Lake on Saturday. Proudfoot noted that the largest supply of fireworks in the world was destroyed in a massive explosion in Hong Kong a few years ago, causing a huge shortage at that time. But he said that today there is a surplus of fireworks because of the faltering economy and resulting cancellation of many displays. Photo courtesy of Erin White.

Deep Creek Lake Fireworks July 4th, 2010

WOW. I have seen almost every display of fireworks at Deep Creek Lake & Broadford Park for the last 25 years or so – and last night’s fireworks may have been the best ever. The grand finale was amazing. I shot a video of it (and lots of photos):

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ6PuZXr9CY&hl=en_US&fs=1]

The setting is always amazing. McHenry Cove starts to fill up with boats at about 7pm or so. I arrived at Ski Harbor on my boat, guests of some clients whom I have worked with for years and from my time owning property there. You see all kinds of picnics, bonfires and party tents set up all along the shorelines of the lake; thousands of people enjoying the 4th of July and the festivities.

The water was really calm in the no-wake cove, and there were kids fishing off the docks and launching kayaks. We setup a picnic blanket and some lawn chairs and settled in for the show. The fireworks typically start at 9:30, so we had some time to kill and to enjoy the atmosphere.

My daughter Kayleah and her friend were fishing off the boat, Noah and his little buddy Wyatt were running around chasing ducks, throwing sticks and exploring the waterfront. We had packed a simple picnic basket with some snacks, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (YUM!) and birthday cake (Happy Birthday Jerry!). The food and company were great and before we knew it, the cove had filled with hundreds of boats and it was showtime…

The fireworks lasted about 30 minutes or so, and the smell of sulphur was drifting through the air. One of the most impressive things for me was the way the sound echoes through the valley and reverberates through the lake. You can hear LOUD echoes on a 1-2 second delay that ring all the way to Sky Valley (a client of mine reports that her dogs are NOT firework fans).

My son, Noah, is turning 3 next month and these were his 3rd set of fireworks he has seen from the lake, but this was by far his most interactive. He spent the first 5 or 10 minutes with his hands over his ears and then seemed to adjust well. You may be able to tell from the video, he was ‘helping’ me adjust the camera 🙂

When the fireworks were finished, we waited for the boat traffic to clear up, and the kids rode home safely in the car – it is a bit scary on the return trip on a boat with all of the traffic, etc. But, as far as I know, everyone made it home safe and happy – thrilled with the most impressive fireworks display Deep Creek Lake has seen in quite a while…thanks to Hugh Umbel for the show!!

Wakesurfing on Deep Creek Lake – Railey Realty Blog

Mike Kennedy commented recently on wakesurfing on the Railey Realty blog, which is a sport I have yet to try…but it seems fun!

One of the great benefits of owning a vacation home and real estate at Deep Creek Lake are all the great activities you and family members can experience. Wakesurfing is fast becoming one of the most popular water sports activities to do on the lake. Wakesurfing is essentially surfing in the wake created by the boat. A wakesurf board is basically a smaller version of a regular ocean surfboard and does not have bindings for your feet. To get up, you start in the water behind the boat in a seated position with your heels on top of the board. While holding a specially designed wakesurf rope the boat then pulls you up. After you are up, you can then pull yourself towards the front of the boat’s wake. After you “catch the wake” and start surfing you can then throw the rope into the back of the boat. The wake created by the boat mimics the look and feel of an actual ocean wave.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center – Photos

Here are some more cool photos that we took at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center last week:

There are so many cool things to do there, interesting activities scheduled almost every day and the setting is amazing. I promised Noah to take him back to the kids corner to play with the BIG turtle…I also noticed a chart tracking the sightings of 2 bald eagles that were observed flying and touching talons – apparently, it was a sign of kinship amongst the birds. Interesting stuff at the DCL Discovery Center!! More from their website:

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, the Department of Natural Resources’ interpretive environmental center along the shores of Deep Creek Lake at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The Discovery Center is a one-of-a-kind educational venue for people of all ages. Through hands-on exhibits that showcase the natural resources of Western Maryland, families can learn about the flora and fauna, wildlife, cultural and historical heritage that have turned this former logging and coal mining region into a popular modern day vacation destination.

Through colorful artwork, photographs and artifacts, the facility’s numerous natural resources exhibits provide a behind the scenes look into Deep Creek Lake and its watershed, industrial development in the area, and conservation issues facing the region today. History buffs will enjoy learning about the cultural and historical heritage of the region, including coal extraction from the former Old Brant Mine, and the role the mighty Youghiogheny River played in timber logging at the turn of the century. The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center also features an aquarium with native fish and other aquatic species from the lake and river, and a raised relief map that gives visitors a unique perspective of the mountainous terrain.

On-site naturalists, rangers and volunteers lead daily educational programs, from leisurely hikes that focus on birdwatching, tree identification and wildflowers, to more extensive educational programming that touches on such subjects as black bear management, endangered species of the Youghiogheny area, submerged aquatic vegetation, boating safety, and trail stewardship.

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center’s 6,000 square foot facility also includes a classroom and conference areas complete with audio visual technology that is available for rent for use for educational purposes. Don’t forget to stop by the Nature Shop, where you’ll find a variety of environmental and educational gifts including toys, souvenirs from the region, field guides, and books with natural resource themes.

Don’t forget to check out the LIVE Fish Cam that was donated by the Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers, Inc. The camera is located underwater near the Discovery Center. A TV in the Discovery Center shows the LIVE feed and what fish are moving around underwater that day. Anglers stop at the Discovery Center to check on the fish because Christmas trees line the shores of the park creating excellent habitat and try to name the fishes spotted on the screen. Watch a video of our LIVE Fish Cam.
