Speaking with Dave Scott – Savageman Reference

Ironman legend to be inducted into USA Triathlon Hall of Fame

By Jon Ackerman Posted: Jan 14, 9:38a ET Updated: Jan 14, 9:38a ET

Spotlight: Ironman legend Dave Scott
American Dave Scott won six Ironman world championships in the 1980s, a mark matched by only one other person. He’s a member of the Ironman, Triathlon and USA Triathlon Halls of Fame.

Since the gun sounded the start of the first Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in 1978, no human has won more world titles than American Dave Scott’s six (though compatriot Mark Allen later matched the feat). In 1993, Scott became the first member of the Ironman Hall of Fame, which he celebrated by coming out of retirement to compete in Kona at age 40. He finished second and felt so good that he entered again two years later, placing fifth…

…Are you still competing these days?
I still train like a demon, but I got clobbered in May ’09. I was thinking about doing an Ironman; I silently told a few people. By the end of May I was going to make a decision and I really felt quite strong. And I was three-quarters of a mile from my house after riding about 56 miles and this woman did a U-turn in front of me in her SUV, and I was coming down this little grade. I screamed and hollered, locked up my brakes and skidded, and I slammed right into the side of her door. So I shattered my scapula and fractured my hand, wrist, and fingers. Ended up having three surgeries and got a blood clot in my lung. So that kind of curtailed things for quite a while.

But I still have a passion for health/fitness. So I’ll do mostly promotional events. I’ve got a couple this year — one grueling half-Ironman called Savageman (in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland) that has this most-wicked climb. I don’t even know how they pave the hill but it’s about 30 percent grade. I don’t have visions of beating too many of the young stallions but I still like to scare them.

Travellers urged to seek out adventures in Maryland

A little bit of love for Garrett County…from the UK 🙂

12 Jan 2011

Holidaymakers who will be visiting the state of Maryland in the US over the coming months have been encouraged to seek out some of the region’s outdoor activities.

According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, the area around Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County is a ‘focal point’ for winter recreation in the western part of the state.

One location worth visiting in the area is Wisp, a resort that boasts attractions such as the Mountain Coaster, which is described as a ‘hybrid of an Alpine slide and a rollercoaster’.

Visitors can also visit state parks such as Herrington Manor, New Germany and Swallow Falls to explore outdoor trails and take in the scenery.

Survival of the Fittest – Deep Creek Lake

Finding a drink of water has been a bit of a challenge of late for those in the wildlife community, as this muskrat was observed lapping up a cold swig from frozen Deep Creek Lake this week. The little furry fellow was watched and photographed by John Mogle, Salisbury, and family, and the photo was submitted by John’s brother Tom Mogle, who resides in Cumberland. The Mogles were staying in a rental unit along old Rt. 219/Deep Creek Drive. The muskrat was spotted on the ice where the roadway crosses a small patch of the lake. “We kept tabs on the fella the entire holiday weekend,” said John Mogle. The high temperature for every day of December until this week has remained below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but a warm-up – with some rain – if forecast for the next few days.

Garrett Co. Man Lobbying For Maryland TV Viewing Capability

A Deep Creek Lake resident has a seemingly simple aspiration – to watch a television station that offers Maryland sports, Maryland news, Maryland weather, and even Maryland campaign commercials. But complicated Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules are impeding Chuck Hoffeditz’s wish.

“People in Maryland, especially Garrett County, want to watch Maryland television,” he told the county commissioners last week during a meeting with state Sen. George Edwards and Del. Wendell Beitzel.

To illustrate his point, Hoffeditz showed the officials a petition containing the signatures of more than 500 people who, indeed, would like to watch Maryland TV. Several of those petition signers attended the meeting and voiced their concerns to the local officials.

Because FCC regulations about only allowing one Designated Market Area (DMA), most local residents can only receive Pittsburgh, Pa., channels through their cable and satellite companies. Even Maryland Public Television is not available to many Garrett Countians, despite the fact that a MPT tower is located on Eagle Rock.

A few Comcast customers in the Finzel/Frostburg area, however, are more fortunate. Their DMA is larger, so they are able to view Pittsburgh, Johnstown (Pa.), Washington, D.C., and Baltimore stations. Hoffeditz would like to have that option, too.

Jay’s note: I remember the days where you could get both Pittsburgh & Washington/Baltimore TV stations – that’s how I cam to love the Steelers & the Redskins. I agree with Chuck, give us the choice!

Maryland Park Service Issues Public Safety Warning For Deep Creek Lake

McHenry, MD – The Maryland Park Service reminds anyone enjoying winter activities on Deep Creek Lake or any frozen body of water, to use caution, particularly at night.

“Snowmobilers, ice fishermen, hikers and cross-country skiers traveling on the frozen lake should exercise caution,” urged Deep Creek Lake Recreation Area Assistant Manager Mark Spurrier.

“Wearing a personal floatation device could prevent a tragedy. If you encounter people, pets or wildlife that have fallen through the ice, call either 911 or the Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-628-9944 for assistance.”

Road salt and abrasives plowed from highway bridges may affect the quality of the ice underneath and unseen snowdrifts can act as ramps and cause sleds and snowmobiles to become airborne leading to a loss of control and accidents.

Deep Creek Lake is a part of the designated Off-Road Vehicle trail system permitting use by registered snowmobiles only. Permits are available by mail or at any of the local state park offices during normal business hours. Snowmobiles may operate at night if equipped with working head and taillights. Snowmobilers may access the lake through Deep Creek Lake State Park or with permission from a private landowner.

For further information on ice conditions at Deep Creek Lake, individuals can contact a park ranger by calling 301-387-5563 during the week-day or the Discovery Center on weekends at 301-387-7067.

Tourism rebounding – gazette.net

Demand for hotel rooms, employment up over national rates
by Lindsey Robbins Staff Writer

Anthony Castellano/The Gazette
Lori Epp (left), marketing director for Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake, chats with Lisa Dennis, events director for the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, during an opening reception for the state tourism conference Wednesday aboard the Catherine Marie at Annapolis City Dock. The conference runs through today.

Demand for Maryland hotel rooms this year through September has exceeded the national average by 1.5 percentage points, growing 8.9 percent from the same time last year.

Margot Amelia, Maryland tourism director, reported the promising data during the Maryland Tourism & Travel Summit at the Loews Annapolis Hotel on Thursday. The conference is hosted by the Maryland Tourism Council, Maryland Tourism Education Foundation and Maryland Office of Tourism Development.

The hotel is a Maryland Green Travel partner, which is a state initiative highlighting hospitality businesses engaged in green practices.

Maryland’s hotel industry also netted 13,000 new jobs from 2009 to 2010, she said. Overall, the state’s tourism employment increased 5.4 percent, compared with 0.7 percent nationally.

“Our industry is adding new employees, more so than others in the nation,” Amelia said. Sales tax revenue from the tourism industry also declined less than others in its tax code, with a 1.3 percent decrease compared with an average 2.5 percent drop. Amelia emphasized that the industry must grow that revenue by more than 3 percent to apply for additional funding for the tourism office.
