Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Sun May 08, 2011, 10:53 PM EDT

— MCHENRY — Vacation Rental Managers Association, CSA Travel Protection and TripAdvisor are bringing a reality TV show/documentary to the Deep Creek Lake area called “Getting Away Together.”

Families or groups who are willing to share their story with a national television audience while on vacation in Deep Creek Lake can apply to appear on the show. The group will be given a six-day vacation at a luxury vacation rental home. Film crews will document the participants playing, dining and relaxing, while getting to know their story.

Submissions should be creative and use photos and/or video to share why the family or group is unique, and why it needs to get away together. Applications will be accepted by Sarah Duck at the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541 or via email at sarah@garrettchamber.com through May 15.

Groups must be available for filming Sept. 6 to 14 and must provide their own transportation to Deep Creek Lake.

The group may not exceed 20 participants and the winner must be at least 24 years old.

Residents of Garrett County and employees and affiliates of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce are not eligible to participate.

All applications will become property of Pine Ridge Television Inc.

“Getting Away Together,” part of the Vacation Rental Managers Association’s Discover Vacation Homes awareness initiative, will follow participants staying together underneath the same roof in vacation rental homes, villas and condos across America. The show calls attention to compelling life stories, destinations, “best-kept” travel secrets and tips to help viewers make decisions about their upcoming travels.

Each episode features a new group of travelers in fun locales with vacation rentals as their home base. The series is produced by Emmy Award-winning PineRidge Film & Television Co. for distribution exclusively on PBS member stations nationwide. The Deep Creek Lake episode will be among 13 travel destinations during the series run.

Garrett County sponsors of the show include the Chamber of Commerce, Garrett County Economic Development, Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, Bill’s Marine Service, Bill’s Outdoor Center, Honi-Honi Bar, Uno Chicago Grill Deep Creek Lake, Arrowhead Market, Garrett 8 Cinemas, Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations and Long & Foster Resort Rentals.

>Natural Resources Police honor their own

>In a packed church basement in Annapolis last night, Natural Resources Police honored officers for their work in law enforcement, rescue, conservation and boating safety.

Cpl. Michael Friend was named Officer of the Year for his tireless efforts to catch drunken boaters on Deep Creek Lake, pursue wildlife poachers and carry out dangerous underwater recovery operations and for his work on behalf of charities such as the annual Polar Bear Plunge that raises money for Special Olympics.

Friend, whose conservation work was recognized in 2008 by the National Wild Turkey Federation, is known for his ability to “improvise, adapt and overcome any situation,” NRP Capt. Bob Davis said.

John Griffin, secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, called the police force a “vital link to our healthier future,” noting that NRP is one of just two law enforcement agencies to have statewide jurisdiction.

>County's air test coughs up little change

>By SHANTEE WOODARDS, Staff Writer
Capital Gazette Communications Published 04/27/11

The American Lung Association’s State of the Air 2011 report gives the county an F grade for smog and a C for fine particle pollution. The county’s grades are the same as in 2010, which marked the first time Anne Arundel scored a C for particle pollution, after several years of D’s and F’s.

The county was not alone in receiving an F for smog. Nearly half of Americans live in areas with similar grades.

The report is based on data collected from air monitoring stations at about 900 locations in the country, including 15 in Maryland.

Overall, the report shows improvement from the previous year, since many of the most polluted areas made some progress, officials said. The strides were attributed to the federal Clean Air Act, which makes states accountable for cleaning up the air….

Anne Arundel was among 12 Maryland counties receiving F grades for smog. Garrett County and Baltimore City both earned C’s, while Worcester County received a D.

>Deep Creek Lake Water Depth

Ever wonder about the water depth at Deep Creek Lake? This map has been around for a long time, and I wanted to ‘digitize’ it for easier reference. It was stowed away safely in the Railey Realty vault of ‘Deep Creek Lake Lore’, and after finding it today, I scanned it into a handy .pdf file. It’s a large file, but feel free to take a look! >Alcohol tax advances in Md. with education funds

>By BRIAN WITTE , 03.29.11, 05:17 PM EDT

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — An increase in Maryland’s alcohol tax advanced in the Maryland Senate on Tuesday, with a significant portion of the first year’s proceeds set aside for Prince George’s County and Baltimore schools.

The Senate measure would raise Maryland’s sales tax on alcohol from 6 percent to 9 percent over three years by 1 percent a year. It would raise about $29 million in fiscal year 2012, $58 million the following year and $85 million in the third year, fiscal analysts estimate.

In the next fiscal year, Baltimore schools would receive about $12 million, and Prince George’s County would receive about $9 million to help boost education funding in Maryland jurisdictions that lagged behind others because of school funding formulas. Proceeds from the alcohol tax would be diverted to those school jurisdictions only in a one-time adjustment.

“These are two of the largest consumers of alcohol in the state and most of the tax revenue is generated from those two jurisdictions, and under the governor’s plan, unfortunately, these two jurisdictions come up short in terms of state aid as contrasted to the rest of the state,” Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, D-Calvert, told reporters. “It’s the result of formulas. It’s not anybody’s diabolical plan.”

>Awesome promo for the Deep Creek Lake area:

By Jedd Ferris • January 31, 2011

Set in the mountains of western Maryland and centered around the 3,900-acre namesake lake, Deep Creek is a tourist-driven Allegheny escape that refuses to compromise its wild character.

After stints at other regional resorts, Mike Valach, who runs ski and rider services at Wisp Ski Resort, found just what he needed in the area’s never-ending mountain sports opportunities.

“This is the recreation mecca,” says Valach. “There is something to do during every season of the year.”

Garrett County is an outdoor playground with rolling peaks, world-class rivers, wicked slopes, and 90,000 acres of public land in the nearby state forests and parks. There’s also a whitewater park above Wisp. When he’s craving a little more urban grit, Valach can be in Pittsburgh in two hours or Washington, D.C. in a little more than three.

“It never gets boring here,” he says. “When winter’s over, it’s time jump on your bike or paddleboard.”

>Crane Makes Rare Visit To Deep Creek Lake

>
At the 40th Christmas Bird Count held at Deep Creek Lake, spectators and wildlife enthusiasts were rewarded for there dedication and patience with the rare winter visit of a sandhill crane. Naturalists present when the above photographs were taken believe the crane to be young, as it has a rusty-colored, feathered crown and yellow eyes. According to Cornell’s Birds of North America, an adult’s crown would be covered with bright red skin, and its eye would be colored somewhere between chrome orange and flame scarlet. No matter the age, however, the bird is distinct and beautiful. Sandhill cranes stand about 4 feet tall with a wing span of 6.5 to 7 feet and are primarily birds of open freshwater wetlands. The cranes generally feed on a wide variety of plant tubers, grains, small vertebrates (e.g., mice and snakes), and invertebrates such as insects or worms.

What fishing opportunities are available in the winter?

Although many people tend to think of fishing in Maryland as a warm-weather activity, there are plenty of opportunities to be had during the winter months.

Excellent trout fishing may be found in many of the waters in the western and central regions of the state. Deep Creek Lake is known for the good ice fishing for yellow perch, walleye and numerous other freshwater species.

The winter months are a great time to target chain pickerel in open water ponds, small lakes and the upper regions of tidal rivers and creeks. Often these areas are thick with grass beds during the warmer months, but make for great fishing during winter.

Maryland anglers are fortunate to have good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass and muskellunge in the upper Potomac River. These coldwater fish can provide a lot of action from shore or small boats.
