>Deep Creek park program features butterfly walk

>
Stephanie Weaver
The Cumberland Times-News Tue Jun 28, 2011, 10:53 PM EDT

DEEP CREEK LAKE — Hot and steamy— that’s how butterflies like their weather. With the exception of the wind Tuesday, the weather was just the right amount of heat and humidity for a butterfly sighting at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

“Flutterbys and Flowers,” a program offered by the park, attracted a handful of people of all ages interested in learning about plants, butterflies and what the two have in common.

Bird watchers may awake at dawn to catch a glimpse of the birds, but butterfly watchers can sleep in since the insects come out during the midday heat. Caroline Blizzard, ranger and naturalist at the park, finds this aspect most appealing.

“You won’t see me at a bird walk at 4 in the morning,” Blizzard said to her group of butterfly watchers, commending those who had also gone on a bird walk at 8 a.m.

As Blizzard pointed out, unlike birds, butterflies are silent, which makes the search for the insect more difficult. But plants are one way to see butterflies up close and personal.

The group headed toward the banks of flowers around the parking lot, surrounded by milkweed, Black-Eyed Susans and Queen Anne’s Lace. These are all common plants that attract butterflies, according to Blizzard.

“Oh my gosh! Come here,” Blizzard said as 15 heads looked to the milkweed plants. She had found a milkweed bug.

Another plant, the butterfly bush, attracts all sorts of butterfly species. This seems like an ideal way to see all kind of butterflies, but Blizzard compares the butterfly bush to a bar where all the drunk butterflies gather.

After a few laughs from the adults in the group, Blizzard changed the comparison to a fast-food restaurant for the younger participants. Just like there are healthier eating options for humans, there are better plants for butterflies, Blizzard said.

The plants are all native to Maryland. About 10 years ago, the park staff saw the need for native plants and planted a section at Herrington Manor State Park. Now, the plants are planted throughout the state parks, according to Blizzard.

One of the most commonly seen butterflies is one that the park raises — the monarch. The park staff raises them during the summer before their migration to Mexico for the winter. A local school tags and names the butterflies to keep track of their travels and arrivals in Mexico.

Skipper butterflies were also seen in abundance Tuesday. Named after their quick flight habits, there are several different species of the skipper butterfly, so many that Blizzard couldn’t name or identify each one.

Jacob and Ruby Feuertein of Lewisburg, Pa., enjoyed the program on butterflies, which gave them “something to do” while vacationing at the lake with their family. Jacob’s favorite part of the program was “seeing the butterflies.”

His sister agreed. “I liked how we could get really close to the butterflies,” she said.

Jun. 16, 2011

Fireworks will light up the sky this Fourth of July during the annual “Fire on the Mountain” at Deep Creek Lake, presented by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.
The display will begin at dark on Monday, July 4. The rain date is July 5. The fireworks will be launched from the top of Bear Claw Tubing Park at Wisp Resort. Prime viewing locations are the scenic overlook area along Rt. 219, Wisp Resort, and from a boat on the lake, particularly around McHenry Cove.

Hugh Umbel Companies is the major sponsor for the 2011 display. The companies include Bear Creek Traders, Deep Creek Foodland Fresh, Legacy Home Corporation, McHenry Beverage Shoppe, and Perkins Restaurant & Bakery.

Chamber president/CEO Nicole Christian expressed her appreciation to the companies for their continued sponsorship of Fire on the Mountain.

“We could not present such a fabulous show without the support of Hugh Umbel Companies and our other generous sponsors, including Wisp Resort, our associate sponsor, and the Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake, a supporting sponsor,” Christian said.

Additional supporters include special sponsors Bill’s Marine Service and Garrett Container Systems, and sponsors Beitzel Corporation, Double G RV Park, Glotfelty Enterprises, Lake Pointe Inn, First United Bank & Trust, Pillar Innovations, Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, and Susquehanna Bank.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Interested business owners may call Sarah Duck, GC Chamber of Commerce, at 301-387-8746.

>Fish kill again at Deep Creek Lake

>
The state Department of the Environment says it’s investigating a small fish kill discovered earlier this week at Deep Creek Lake, the popular western Maryland mountain resort area which experienced a large and prolonged fish die-off during last year’s blistering summer.

A fishing guide reported spotting about 50 dead fish Monday or Tuesday, and a state fisheries biologist checking it out found “scattered fish, in low density” at various points around the lake, according to Jay Apperson, an MDE spokesman. Most were bluegills, and all appeared to have been dead for several days, with no signs of fresh deaths, he wrote in an email.

About 2,000 walleye and other mostly deep-water fish went belly-up from July into September last year, an unusually large and prolonged die-off that state investigators concluded resulted from a combination of heat stress and bacterial infection that can kill fish when they’re stressed. Adding to the stress was the shrinkage of the zone of water in the lake with enough oxygen for fish to breathe comfortably – also likely a result of high water temperatures.

>"Miracle" Plane Seen In Garrett County

The US Airways jetliner that Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger successfully landed on New York’s Hudson River in January 2009 following a bird strike that disabled the engines came through Garrett County on I-68 Tuesday afternoon. An industrial moving company, J. Supor & Son, assisted the 120-foot fuselage on its final voyage, from Harrison, N.J., to the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, N.C. The wings and tail were shipped separately. Numerous motorists were able to catch a glimpse of the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane as it made its way through the Mid-Atlantic region. The entire crew of Flight 1549 was awarded the Master’s Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. The award citation read, “This emergency ditching and evacuation, with the loss of no lives, is a heroic and unique aviation achievement.” Capt. Sully’s landing has been described as the most successful ditching in aviation history. Photo by Brenda Ruggiero.

>Deep Creek Lake gets 'incomplete' on health check

>A checkup performed by University of Maryland scientists finds Deep Creek Lake appears to be generally healthy. But researchers say there’s not enough monitoring done of the popular western Maryland tourist attraction to tell what shape it’s really in – or how much trouble it may be having with harmful aglal blooms, polluted runoff or other symptoms of the growth of vacationers and vacation homes at the mountain resort.

So a year after concerns were voiced about the 3,900-acre manmade lake as it experienced its largest recorded fish kill, the first-ever assessment of the lake comes back with an “incomplete” on its ecological report card.

Basic water quality in the lake seemed to be good, and bacteria levels did not appear to pose a health risk for swimming, according to the report by EcoCheck, a partnership between UM’s Center for Environmental Science and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The group was commissioned to produce a report card on the lake last year by Friends of Deep Creek Lake, a citizen’s watchdog group. It’s raised concerns about water quality being affected by polluted runoff from farms and vacation homes, leaking septic tanks and shoreline erosion. Adding to the anxiety was a prolonged fish kill last summer, in which an estimated 2,000 walleye, perch and a range of other species went belly up from late July into September.

Boaters, residents at odds over noise reduction plan By Wendy Gilbert Mariner Editor Cecil Whig | 2 comments

A proposal to limit boat noise on Cecil County rivers split residents largely into two camps at a Tuesday night hearing: Older waterfront property owners and younger “performance boating” enthusiasts.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources officials hosted the session at Elkton High School on pending regulations to quiet noisy boats on the Bohemia, Elk and Northeast rivers as well as the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

Bob Gaudette, director of boating services, said the agency gets a lot of telephone calls about the breach of the waterfront peace. Other than Deep Creek Lake, there are few places in the state that generate as many complaints, he said….

>Md. seeks to quiet speed boats in northeast Chesapeake Bay, Deep Creek Lake

>THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ELKTON, Md. — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is seeking tighter restrictions on speed boat noise in two popular boating areas.

The agency is holding a hearing Tuesday night in Elkton on boat noise levels in the northeastern Chesapeake Bay.

It will hold another hearing Thursday at Deep Creek Lake State Park regarding noise levels on that western Maryland lake.

DNR officials say the two areas account for more than half of the state’s boat-noise complaints.

>April 2010 Residential Real Estate Sales – Market Update

>
April has come and gone and left behind another month of real estate sales in Garrett County & at Deep Creek Lake. There were 21 total sales, down one from last month and up 4 sales from April 2010.

I’ve been warning for months that the inventory is coming…and here it is. There are now 701 available properties on the market. I recall one day getting an update of 17 new homes – I believe last Monday. That number is up 103 from last month. Not surprising, as this is the time of year people like to start looking for their summer purchase. Homes show better in the warmer weather & the fresh landscaping/green grass helps a lot. The large portion of those ‘new’ listings are re-listed homes that didn’t sell last year.

Let’s take a look at the stats:

There are 43 homes under contract (38 last month).

The average list vs. ORIGINAL sales price was 81.62%, down from last month (83.51%).

The ADJUSTED list vs sale price was 87.31%, down from last month (89.63%).

The current # of active/for sale listings in MRIS (minus timeshares) is 703, up from last months 598. We have a 33 month supply of homes available (minus timeshares) based solely on the April sales numbers. This number is up from last month’s 27 mont supply.

Random observations:

•4 ‘newer’ home sold in March (5 years old or less)

•It appears that 11 or so of these sales were vacation homes

•14 homes sold under $300,000 (last month was 15)

•15 homes sold under $400,000

•2 homes sold over $ 1 million (same as last month)

•0 homes sold for higher than full price or at full price (last month was 4)

•One house sold for 52.63% of asking price – 139 Frederick Circle

•The oldest home that sold was 93 yrs old

•The average age of the homes that sold was 28 years (37 last month)

•3 condo/townhouse properties sold (3 last month)

Here are the statistical breakdowns:

Average Sale Price: $320,310 (last month $297,427)

Average Days on Market: 273/378 (last month 205/290) (days on market with current broker/total days on market)

Here’s a little something extra – more in depth stats by price range, from our friends at RBIntel.
