MCHENRY, Md. — Maryland environmental regulators are addressing concerns about low water levels in Deep Creek Lake.

The head of the Department of the Environment said in an Oct. 19 letter to a citizen advisory board that a faulty valve on a hydroelectric dam may be leaking excessive water.

He says Brookfield Power Corp. plans to examine and repair or replace the valve as needed.

Lakeside adventures

Aug. 14–STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSEY FLEMING THE DOMINION POST

THIS IS the third in a three-part series about day trips.

Traveling has become something of a ritual in responsibility for me. It seems I can’t go farther than the grocery store without a Garmin to guide me and a multitude of itineraries, back-up plans and emergency contacts in tow.

There was a time, about five years ago, when I traveled across the Atlantic, canceled my flight back home and happily roamed foreign lands months longer than expected — with not a checklist in site.

I don’t know what kind of voodoo magic burgeoning adulthood cast on me between now and then that makes planning out possible ventures on Google Maps’ street-view a requirement, but I aim to change it.

With that in mind, I decided to pick a place for my day trip and plan little else.

After a chat with my friend, I settled on the Deep Creek Lake area in Garrett County, Md. Not exactly a trek across the Amazon, true, but you gotta start somewhere. And a beautiful lake, only an hour away, with some of the easiest directions I’ve ever encountered, seemed a perfect first step.

Thunderhill to celebrate release of 55-song album on Saturday

Posted Aug 09, 2011 @ 12:21 PM

Keyser, W.Va. — For the News Tribune

KEYSER – Minco Records recording artists Thunderhill are proud to announce the release of their new double-CD album, “Local Legend: 1963-2011,” due out on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The album release party, featuring a performance by the reunited band, friends and family, will take place that day at the world famous Honi Honi Bar in Deep Creek, Md.

The 55-song collection documents the entire 48-year history of the legendary band, from its beginnings as the award-winning ’60s folk trio The Thunder Hill Singers through their heyday as a top-drawing country comedy act in the West Virginia and Maryland areas during the ’70s and ’80s, ending with their recent, wildly popular reunion shows in the 21st century.

Looking for a Change of Scenery

The author forgets to readjust her vacation vision to accommodate kids.

A friend of mine had just returned from vacation with her three kids and husband. ““How was it?” I asked her.

“It was a change of scenery,” she responded, trying to sound neutral while biting her tongue.

Ahh, I replied. I got it. Taking a vacation with kids is an experience entirely different than, say, getting away for a girls’ weekend or spending time away with your spouse….

…After the brutal July we just sweated through, I couldn’t wait to get away to Deep Creek Lake for a while. The average temperature tends to be at least 10 degrees cooler than in Baltimore; a sweater on August nights is almost a given in the mountains of Western Maryland. It can get hot and sunny during the day, but you can always escape into the woods during the heat of the day, and hike or bike under the cool canopy of 300-year-old trees. Sounds good, right?

Riding the wind in a Laser sailboat on Deep Creek Lake on a sunny day in mid-July is just about as good as it gets. The sailor in this photo is Carrie Dodd, and the shot was taken during the Deep Creek Yacht Club’s Full-Rig Laser Regatta this past weekend, an event in which Carrie finished third. The photo was taken by Carrie’s grandmother Barbara Meredith. The weather prognosticators are calling for the exceedingly warm, sunny conditions to continue on the Mountaintop for the next several days, affording opportunity for enjoyment of Garrett County’s numerous outdoor recreational offerings.

Daisy Graham, seen here proving that one is never too old to try new things, recently took her first boat ride on Deep Creek Lake. The 101½-year-old Graham not only experienced her first boat ride, but took the captain’s chair and piloted the watercraft. The opportunity was afforded to Graham and others from the Diakon Adult Day Care Services at Mountain Glade by Lew Wheeler, who hosted a picnic and a day on the water at his home. Graham’s family have expressed their thanks to Wheeler, the Garrett Transit Service, and the volunteers for making the event possible.

Maryland's Other Beach

Skip the ocean and head to Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland for family fun.
By Evan Serpick

We love the beach. But sometimes, when we’re sitting in traffic on the Bay Bridge, contemplating higher tolls and the mob scene in Ocean City, we begin to wonder: Isn’t there another great vacation spot nearby?

As it turns out, there is. From Baltimore, just point your car in the opposite direction of the Eastern Shore, drive the same three hours, and you’ll end up at Deep Creek Lake, a treasure trove of summer fun without the crowds.

For the locals and visitors who come every year—many of whom have summer houses on the lake, which has 69 miles of coastline and is the largest inland body of water in the state—it is a well-guarded secret. (Sorry, guys!) The lake’s sandy beach, with swimming and multiple boating options; a surprising diversity of warm-weather activities, many at nearby Wisp Resort (296 Marsh Hill Rd., 301-387-4911, http://www.wispresort.com); a great nature center; and lots of dining and shopping attractions make it an excellent, family-friendly alternative to the ocean.
