More Active Oversight Planned For Deep Creek Lake
July 28, 2014 6:49 AM
MCHENRY, Md. (AP) — A draft management plan for the Deep Creek Lake watershed seeks better coordination among government agencies and private parties whose interests converge at the western Maryland vacation destination.
The Department of Natural Resources and the Garrett County Commissioners released the plan Friday for public comment through Aug. 9.
It was developed by a local steering committee amid concerns that factors including residential development, natural-gas exploration, agricultural runoff and failing septic systems threaten the lake’s quality and recreational value.
The plan calls for the state and county to jointly develop an agency to coordinate activities within the watershed.

Ever wanted to ... Complete the Savageman Triathlon
Taking place over two days in the Appalachian Mountains, this half-ironman is widely renowned for both its unrelenting difficulty and beauty that can leave you gasping for breath one minute and gasping in awe of the scenery the next.
The name ‘Savageman’ comes partly from the fact that participants initially descend down the Savage river, then attempt to ascend Big Savage Mountain, twice, and partly from the fact that it takes a certain breed of individual to enter like this.
There is the option of entering the 70.0 and the 30.0. The Savageman 70.0 is the half-ironman version, composed of a 1.2 mile swim, a 55.7 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run, while the Savageman 30.0 consists of a 0.9 mile swim, a 22.9 mile bike and a 6.2 mile run.
Those who complete both are said to complete the Savage 100! With a small field of around 500 competitors, both Savageman races allow participants to enjoy the experience and race their own race, without the added pressure and annoyance of avoiding large crowds. The race is completely non-profit with its proceeds going to charity. The race is very well supported with plenty of volunteers to man every turn and alert all dangerous parts of the route, while also providing support to participants. –
Grand jury looking into 84 Lumber deal with La. company
July 14, 2014 10:25 PM
A Louisiana businesswoman who claims a deal with 84 Lumber ruined her 30-year-old contracting company has been subpoenaed to testify Wednesday before a federal grand jury in Baton Rouge about the contract she had with the Washington County business for two school construction projects funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency following Hurricane Katrina…..
…..Meanwhile, Gregory Mortimer, a developer in Deep Creek, Md. who also is in litigation with 84 Lumber, said federal investigators have contacted him about his case against the company.
In April 2011, 84 Lumber sued Mr. Mortimer for $600,000 in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas for unpaid labor and supplies. Mr. Mortimer countersued the same month in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, claiming the poor quality of work 84 Lumber did for him while building luxury villas in Deep Creek, Md., killed his real estate business.

Fishing Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake
By Chris Lawrence in Outdoors | July 08, 2014 at 1:36PM

MCHENRY, Md. — The first thing you notice is the cool air. Nestled in the western mountains of Maryland, not far from the West Virginia border, is a unique lake which can be a gem for a summer retreat.
Deep Creek Lake is a highland reservoir that features attributes normally confined to the deep south.
“It has characteristics of each,” said Brent Nelson, a longtime guide on the lake. “You go really far south into Turkey Neck and Green Glade you feel like you’re in a southern impoundment. there’s a lot of meadow grass, lily pads, and cattails. Then you get down to the dam you get that rocky shoreline and it looks like a highland reservoir. We have two very different types of habitat on the lake.”

— MCHENRY — Fireworks will light up the sky at Deep Creek Lake July Fourth at the annual Fire on the Mountain display presented by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.
GCC Technologies LLC is the major sponsor for the 2014 display, which is set to begin at dark. The shells are launched from the top of the Bear Claw Tubing Park at Wisp Resort.
Prime viewing locations include the scenic overlook on U.S. Route 219, Wisp Resort and from a boat on the lake, particularly around McHenry Cove.
“I would like to thank GCC Technologies for their sponsorship of the Fire on the Mountain fireworks display,” said Nicole Christian, president and CEO of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. “We could not present such a fabulous show without the support of GCC Technologies and our other generous fireworks sponsors.”
The rain date for the event is July 5.

Major consolidation planned for Garrett County schools
Student population redistribution proposed
Greg Larry
— OAKLAND — The Garrett County Board of Education is proposing a major shuffle of the student population as well as a rearrangement of districts and class space as part of an ongoing effort to consolidate due to falling enrollment and a shrinking funding base.
After having studies completed on the school facilities and how they can best be utilized given the current student population, the school board has developed a four-year plan to consolidate the school system.
The consolidation will include moving many students to different schools and will cause families to review their transportation options.
Jane Wildesen, the supervisor of elementary education for the board, is also a member of the School Attendance Area Committee, which helped develop the set of recommendations that are a part of the new plan. The new consolidation plan is open for public input by email and postal mail through June. Two meetings, on June 16 at 5 p.m. at Southern Middle School and June 18 at a location to be determined, will be held to take public input as well. The board may take action on the plan at the June 18 meeting.
Wildesen, who stressed that she does not speak for the school board, said the consolidation plan has been a challenge.
“Anytime changes like this are considered it is difficult. We have already closed three elementary schools: Dennett Road, Bloomington and Kitzmiller,” said Wildesen.
The plan asks for the boundaries for all schools to be revised. The proposed changes in the new consolidation plan are as follows:
• Portable units adding eight classrooms will be added to Broad Ford Elementary School to alleviate overcrowding.
• Approximately 25 students from Broad Ford will be sent to Crellin.
• Broad Ford students living in the Swan Meadow district will have an option to attend Swan Meadow.
• Southern Middle School to undergo complete renovation. Sixth grade to use portable units during construction.
• 57 students at Broad Ford will be sent to Yough Glades.
• Approximately 47 students at Yough Glades to attend Swan Meadow.
• Swan Meadow to become K-5, with grades 6 to 8 attending Southern Middle.
Bus transportation will remain as is and will not be extended to encompass any of the proposed changes for the 2014/2015 school year. Any student who can use established routes will continue to be provided that bus service.
“If a stop is on the existing routes, we will honor that. The transportation system is being evaluated for 2015/2016. We are still analyzing the cost for transportation,” said Wildesen.
Wildesen said the renovations at Southern Middle School are extensive and will take two years. She said the project will depend on securing funding.
“The school is 37 years old and has never had any revisions. We are hoping for approval for the design phase. If approved, we could start in the summer of 2015,” she said.
The boundaries of the Swan Meadow, Broad Ford and Yough Glades districts are all being re-evaluated. The school system also wants to implement a universal start and end time for all schools.
The plan has a proposal that would grandfather the incoming fifth-graders at Broad Ford to stay at Broad Ford if they apply for an “Out of Area Request.”
“Our hope is for a far more efficient and sustainable delivery of educational services to all students,” said Wildesen.
