Hundreds of hearty souls waded into icy Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland on Saturday for the annual Deep Creek Dunk to benefit Special Olympics Maryland.

The Maryland Natural Resources Police had to cut away a thick layer of ice from the lake to make room for the 850 dunkers, who waded into the water from a spot near the Honi Honi bar.

“It looks like Alaska with the backdrop of the chunks of ice,” said Jason Schriml, vice president of communications for Special Olympics Maryland.

The dunk raised about $160,000, just shy of the goal of $170,000.

While the lake was covered in a 16-inch-thick coating of ice and the water was a frigid 32 degrees, the air temperature was about 50 degrees, Schriml said.

“It wasn’t balmy, but if you’re getting out in 50-degree weather, it’s not too bad,” he said.

>Deep Creek ice has unseen hazards

>SWANTON — The Maryland Park Service reminds all snowmobilers, fishermen and cross-country skiers of the potential for unseen safety hazards on Deep Creek Lake, particularly at night. An area of ice has been removed near Uno Chicago Grill on U.S. Route 219 to create open water for the Special Olympics Deep Creek Dunk.

Ice has also been removed along the shoreline of the Discovery Center for ice rescue and cold water diving training for emergency services personnel conducted by the Maryland State Police. These areas will remain unsafe for quite some time and will be marked with reflective traffic cones.

Surface conditions under bridges are often particularly hazardous and snow drifts or pressure ridges can act as ramps, causing sleds to be-come airborne.

Snowmobiles must be registered for use on the lake. Permits are available by mail or at any of the local state park offices.

For information on ice conditions, call the park headquarters at 301-387-5563 or the Discovery Center on weekends at 301- 387-7067.

Deep Creek's Got Talent

The Honi-Honi Bar is proud to present our 3rd Annual Deep Creek’s Got Talent! fundraiser event on June 19th, 2010 at the Honi-Honi Bar. Last year, through the generosity and support of contestants, sponsors, and local businesses, we were able to raise over $13,000 for the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club Blind Skiers Program. Over the past two years, more than $27,000 has been raised for this organization. This year, we are very excited and to support both the Deep Creek Lake Volunteer Fire Department as well as the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club Blind Skiers Program.

Ocean City eyeing end to unemployment benefits for seasonal workers

http://ifawebnews.com:

Ocean City (Md.) Council members are considering asking the state to eliminate unemployment benefits to seasonal workers, a change that could affect a number of businesses across the state, according to advocates.

The council has until July 2 to present to the Maryland Municipal League, a lobbying organization, what items it would like the Maryland General Assembly to consider in 2011, according to the Daily Times newspaper.

Councilman Joseph Hall told the newspaper halting unemployment benefits for seasonal workers might force employers to raise wages for all seasonal workers.

But Town Attorney Guy Ayres said Deep Creek Lake and other resort areas of Maryland, and Baltimore City might benefit from the change.

Ski Harbor at Deep Creek Lake – Community Profile

Ski Harbor is a lakefront condo & townhouse community at Deep Creek Lake. One of the coolest features of this community is the land it sits on – a 1,200+ feet peninsula on the shores of Deep Creek Lake. You can always find a quiet spot to sit and read, picnic or just think. Lots of different amenities: indoor swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, beach volleyball, basketball court (I’ve even witnessed street hockey!), swing sets, benches, canoe & kayak racks and more. There are dock slips available, lake views from almost anywhere on the property, 2 no-wake zones (great for kayaking & fishing), and acres of grassy, level lakefront common area. You have MEGA views of Wisp Ski Resort & the Bear Claw tubing park, as well as wide body views of McHenry cove from the point of the peninsula.

There are 2-4 bedroom condo’s & townhomes available for sale or for vacation rentals. Its location near Wisp & on the water offers a ‘rental friendly’ location that is sure to impress your visitors, family & friends. You can get a 2 bedroom condo in the low $200k’s!

Another great perk is a front row seat to fireworks. The Wisp always sets off the 4th of July fireworks from the Bear Claw tubing park, and I as I mentioned, the view is AMAZING! McHenry cove fills up with hundreds of boats, all lit up at night, and it’s quite a sight to behold.

If you are in the market for a great lakefront vacation home or centrally located condo, Ski Harbor is one place that you will definitely want to explore!
