Hundreds of people flocked to Wisp Resort Sunday afternoon to see Food Network star Duff Goldman and several of the staff members of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore. The company created a birthday cake for the resort, which turned 55 this month, and for which a two-day party was held Sunday and Monday. The cake was a model of Marsh Mountain, complete with the ski lifts, trail signs, and fondant skiers, snowboarders, and tubing folks. It was designed and made by Lauren Friedman, Erica Harrison, Anna May, and other staff members, several of whom were present for the serving of the cake. The process to build the cake took about five days, they said.

Winter break is a time to relax, celebrate the holidays, and have fun with the winter climate. “Having fun” does not include driving dangerously on slick roads and shoveling out your family’s driveway, but it can include checking out the area’s top skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing resorts. Here is a list of the best places to go, their rates, and how far away they are.

In Maryland:

WISP RESORT

“With a world renowned energy-efficient snowmaking system and over 100 inches of annual snowfall in Garrett County, Wisp’s 132 acres of ski terrain provide snowsport enthusiasts an incredible winter playground. Non-skiers and boarders won’t be left out; in fact, they’ll have as much trouble deciding what to do next with all that Wisp Resort and the Deep Creek Lake area have to offer: mountain coaster, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fly fishing and more.” – www.wispresort.com

The event is free; donations appreciated. To reserve a spot, call 877-794-0606.

3) On Sunday, celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake. One-day lift tickets are $7, sports rental and group lessons are half price. Activities include a scavenger hunt, a hot cocoa and cider tasting, muscis and games. At 1 p.m., Wisp will unveil a birthday cake made by Baltimore’s Charm City Cakes and cut free pieces for everyone. The celebration will spill over to Monday. Deep Creek Lake welcomes ski season

Posted: 12/03/2010

MCHENRY, Md. – Maryland’s only ski resort is preparing to open its doors.

Wisp Resort says the Deep Creek Lake region received several inches of snow Thursday and Friday, combined with plummeting temperatures that allowed for three straight days of snowmaking.

Wisp will open a beginner trail on Saturday and Sunday, with reduced-price lift tickets of $10 for adults and kids.

The grand opening is set for Thursday, and more terrain is expected to be open by then.

Wisp celebrates its 55th anniversary this year and will provide several discounts next weekend,
including $7 lift tickets on Dec. 12 and 13.

Wisp resort celebrates 55 years

Saturday, December 04, 2010

McHENRY, Md. — Wisp knows how to throw a party.

The western Maryland resort overlooking Deep Creek Lake will celebrate its 55th year of operation Dec. 12 and 13 with steeply discounted lift tickets, half-price rental equipment and group lessons, entertainment and free birthday cake on each day.

Lift tickets for adults and children will be $7. Rental equipment and lessons will be $18 and $17.50, respectively.

Depending on snow conditions, guests may have their choice of up to 32 slopes and trails served by two quad chairlifts, five triple chairs, four conveyor lifts, one surface tow and one loading carpet.

The resort has a state-of-the-art snowmaking system and receives a lot of natural snow.

Wisp, which will hold its Grand Opening on Thursday, opened Belly Flop this morning for skiers and snowboarders who couldn’t wait to get back on the snow. It’s a beginner trail served by an easy-to-ride conveyor lift.

Marketing director Lori Epp said the off-snow highlight of the birthday party will be a “one-of-a-kind” birthday cake “designed, created and masterfully executed by Baltimore’s famous Charm City Cakes.”

Hearing Slated Regarding Wisp Water Request

Support the Republican Newspaper! It’s only $9.95/year for the online edition!

Sep. 30, 2010

A public informational hearing will be held on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Deep Creek Discovery Center regarding an application made by Wisp Resort to draw water from a well in the Hoyes Run/Fantasy Valley area. The hearing is hosted by the Maryland Department of the Environment, and arguments for and against the proposal will be heard.
The application by Wisp, which was made this summer, is requesting a permit to withdraw ground water from one well in the Greenbrier/Pocono Formation for irrigation at the Lodestone Golf Course. The MDE is considering an appropriation for an annual average of 48,000 gallons of ground water per day and 175,000 gallons in the month of maximum use. The project was advertised in The Republican newspaper on Aug. 19.

Concerns have been raised by citizens in the area of Hoyes Run, who have stated that it is the only stream in Maryland in which brown, rainbow, and brook trout breed in the wild, and the use of water proposed by Wisp may weaken the stream and endanger the wildlife. Other concerns raised have to do with the residential needs for the water in that area.

Landowners in the area are pushing for a proper environmental impact statement prior to approving the licenses, and greater protection for this resource, according to Bryan Hubbard, a citizen involved in the process.

The public is invited to attend the hearing.

The last of the snow has melted at Wisp Ski Resort Deep Creek Lake

Every year, there is a large patch of brown, muddy snow that is the leftover of the largest whaleback on the mountain. This year was no different. My friend Larry Smith @ Railey Realty informed me today that the snow at Wisp has finally melted! He tells me that he has been watching out his office window for the last few days and today was the day it finally melted. 76 and sunny will do it, that’s for sure.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Apr. 29, 2010

Karen Myers, president of Recreational Industries Inc., the firm which owns and operates Wisp Resort, and president of Mountaineer Log & Siding Company Inc., was one of three Marylanders formally inducted last night into the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s Maryland Business Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport and attended by an estimated 500 of the state’s top business leaders.
Myers is the first Western Maryland business leader to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, which now includes 32 members. The Hall of Fame was established to recognize entrepreneurs and business executives whose contributions have helped advance the quality of life for Marylanders and improve the state’s business climate.

Myers, who represents the 10th generation of her family in Garrett County, is a member of a number of boards and organizations, including the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, Garrett County Board of Realtors, Garrett County Development Corporation, and Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, on most of which she has served as a director and/or officer. She was twice named to the Daily Record’s Maryland’s Top 100 Women, and was selected Garrett County Woman of the year and Garrett County Employer of the Year. She is an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Oakland, and of the Garrett Community Concert Band.

“It is my high honor to accept this recognition on behalf of my partners at Wisp, Steve Richards and Gary Daum; the Wisp management team; and our 125 year-round employees and 700 seasonal employees,” Myers said in her acceptance speech. “We’re in the ‘fun’ business, and it is our goal to generate smiles on [the faces of] each of our customers. It is not a one-person show; it is a team…

164 Susan's Way – GA7301782 – Deep Creek Lake Real Estate for Sale

I had a chance to preview this house for a client on Tuesday and took a few photos. The house has an amazing location, fronting on the Wisp Golf course. It has big views of the Wisp ski slopes, and is surrounded by water – community and golf course ponds. Very peaceful setting. It’s a new listing from Dawn Monahan, and here is a link to some more information. It is priced at $450,000, which is a little less than the norm for an incoming producing property with these kind of views and amenities.
