Brinkley: Western Maryland wants responsible spenders in Congress

As congressional candidate in a district that ranges from the hills of Garrett County to the tech corridor along I-270,–Maryland Sen. David Brinkley said he has found something that ties everyone together: dismay over federal spending.

“The common denominator they all have is a concern about federal government spending sucking the economy dry,” he said.

The same concern propelled him to run for the 6th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Republican legislator from New Market said national debt and bloated government spending isn’t a new problem, but it’s one that keeps getting worse.

Md. AG looks to protect landowners from natural gas speculators

BY JESSICA M. KARMASEK

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Legal Newsline) — Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler announced this week a campaign aimed at protecting landowners in western Maryland from what he calls “high-pressure sales tactics” by natural gas drilling speculators.

Speculators are seeking to obtain mineral rights in the Maryland portion of the Marcellus Shale, a large underground rock formation stretching from upstate New York to southwestern Virginia.

The region is rich in natural gas deposits — estimated to contain 250 to 500 trillion cubic feet of the valuable energy resource.

Landowners whose properties sit above the Marcellus Shale should know their legal rights and potential risks from leasing their land to energy companies interested in drilling for natural gas using the process known as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” Gansler said Tuesday.

ACCIDENT, Md. — U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski is sharing ideas for improving rural education during a visit to far western Maryland.

The Maryland Democrat meets Wednesday in Accident with Garrett County educators, parents and students. The visit follows a similar meeting Tuesday in Allegany County.

Mikulski sits on the Senate Rural Education Caucus. She also chairs a subcommittee that she says will play a major role in rewriting the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

>Fracking endangers Susquehanna, group says

>The rush to tap natural gas reserves in Pennsylvania prompted the environmental group American Rivers today to name the Susquehanna River the most endangered water way in the country. One of the nation’s longest rivers, The Susquehanna supplies drinking water to six million people. It’s also the chief tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

The designation comes as national environmental groups press for a crackdown on the gas drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing, which involves pumping millions of gallons of water laced with chemicals and other substances deep into the ground to extract methane from layers of rock.

American Rivers points to the rash of spills, leaks and contaminated drinking-water wells in Pennsylania that have been linked to fracking, which is being used to get at gas locked in vast Marcellus shale deposits underlying much of Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia and western Maryland.

BALTIMORE – While many regions of the state get occasional spurts of snow, the Deep Creek Lake area in Western Maryland is the state’s true winter wonderland.

Since we can’t do anything about the cold weather, take a long weekend, and get out there and enjoy it.

Located just three hours from Baltimore, the resort offers a great chance for downhill and cross-country skiing, outdoor fun and a close getaway.

Constellation Energy Completes Acquisition Of Criterion Wind Project in Western Maryland

Apr. 8, 2010

Constellation Energy announced yesterday that it has closed its agreement with Clipper Windpower Inc. to acquire the Criterion wind project on Backbone Mountain in Garrett County and to purchase 28 Clipper Liberty 2.5-megawatt wind turbines for the project.

The 70-megwatt project will be developed, constructed, owned, and operated by the Baltimore-based Constellation Energy. Kathleen W. Hyle, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Constellation Energy, estimates that up to 125 new jobs will be created during peak construction. She said that commercial operation of the wind energy facility is anticipated by year-end.

“Maryland’s clean energy goals are among the most ambitious in the nation, and we’re committed to working with the state to achieve them by investing in an array of solar, wind, biomass, and other sustainable energy projects,” said Hyle. “The market for clean energy products and services is growing rapidly in Maryland and across competitive energy markets nationwide. Investments in sustainable energy sources improve the environment by reducing carbon emissions, spur much-needed job growth, and allow us to broaden our clean-energy product offerings for customers.”

Hyle said that Constellation Energy intends to complete the local project “in an environmentally responsible manner, with special attention to avoid, minimize, and mitigate any potential wildlife impacts from the project.”

She added that the company will continue to work with state and federal agencies as part of this effort and plans to apply for an “incidental take” permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Western Maryland – north, south, west, but not east?

Frederick N. Rasmussen talks about the age old debate of whether Maryland is Northern or Southern in the Baltimore Sun. I got a kick out of the following about Western Maryland:

“Maryland is in many ways three states in one – all below the Mason-Dixon line, to be sure. Residents of far off Western Maryland, closer to Pittsburgh than Baltimore, tend to follow those professional sports teams. I remember being at Deep Creek Lake in the early 1980s trying to find a Baltimore newspaper and instead being confronted with stacks of Pittsburgh papers.”

It’s true that most here tend to cheer more for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, & Pirates, though there are some of us who share our love of Pittsburgh sports with at least one other ‘Maryland’ team – my weakness is the Washington Redskins 🙂 So the way I look at it, my two favorite football teams have 9 Super Bowls between them! I have come to think of my teams as the Steelskins:
