Garrett to shift road affected by sink holes

Posted: Thursday, August 7, 2014 11:09 am

BARTON — Bore samples taken from Aaron Run Road have determined that the sink hole area was much deeper than the Maryland Department of Environment Bureau of Mines had anticipated, according to Jay Moyer, director of the Garrett County Department of Public Works.

“Therefore pile driving of sheeting to create a stable shoulder is not an option,” said Moyer.

The road has been closed since May 17. In order to restore the road surface, a right of way has been obtained from the adjacent property owner, according to Moyer.

“This will allow the road to be shifted to the north and should help reduce the total cost of the project,” said Moyer. “The property owner agreed to participate by donating the land needed and this was accomplished by the county agreeing to upgrade the entrance to the private property.”

Sudden and Severe

Mar. 1, 2012

Flooding was sudden and severe last evening in Garrett County and the surrounding area, with more than two inches of rain falling in the late afternoon in heavy downpours that caused drainage overflows, flash-flooding, and probably thousands of wet basements.

This photo was taken in Terra Alta, W.Va., by Matthew Friend of Oakland as he traveled through that town late yesterday afternoon. Several roads were closed at the peak of the storm, and some remained closed this morning in the southern part of the county, including Smouse Road. Debris covered most roadways this morning as well. The weather continues to be quite uncharacteristic for Garrett County, with warm temperatures and even thunder and lightning with yesterday’s Leap Day storm. Snow, a rare event this year, is predicted to fall Sunday, but the temperatures are to go back up Monday.

>West Virginia: The state that said no

>By Preston Williams, Tuesday, April 12, 12:31 PM

West Virginia is the only state formed because of the Civil War. Just as North battled South in the country, West confronted East in Virginia. The two regions formed a single state in name, but not in geography, economy, climate, descent of its residents or way of life.

Faced with what they considered an overbearing and neglectful state government, and after years of simmering resentment toward their eastern neighbors, citizens in the mountainous western regions of Virginia refused to take part in secession — “the crowning act of infamy,” thundered one politician from that part of the state. They stood up for the Union and declared themselves independent.

Did you know all that?

Neither did I, and I grew up there.

Oh, I knew the basic facts, taught in my state history class in eighth grade. What didn’t register was the revolutionary spirit it took to separate from a state that had produced seven presidents. Or the questionable legality of West Virginia’s origins. Or the handwringing Virginia’s split caused President Lincoln (“the division of a State is dreaded as a precedent”). All these were curiously and unfortunately underplayed during my 22 years in the state sometimes referred to as “the child of the rebellion.”
