Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language,” said American author Henry James (1843-1916). A great many would agree with his sentiment, especially while playing in the sand or wading in the waves. The height of summer is upon the Mountaintop, with temperatures warmer than the usual Garrett County clime.

While much of the nearby area is suffering severe drought conditions, this county has been spared the worst of it, with rain being a little less stingy with its appearances. The forecast for the next week is rocky, with storms possible each day. The heat is to be less – back to the more normal mid-70s range. The colorful tiger swallowtail butterfly is quite common in Garrett County, and is able to find more nectar this spring than perhaps ever before. The unusual weather patterns, which launched an early and quite flowery springtime, are continuing on the mountaintop, with colder temperatures this week (about 39 last night) than in much of March.

This is one FANTASTIC picture, isn’t it?

Ray, who sent it in, says he has it framed in his house. It’s his Golden Retriever Tucker playing submarine at Deep Creek Lake. I’m ready to frame it and he’s not even my pup!

“This is my Golden Retriever Tucker,” Ray says. “At least those are parts of him (nose and tail) after water entry in his usual ebullient fashion to beat the heat. I call it ‘sub dog.'”
