The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) will offer enhanced programs on Saturdays this fall beginning this Saturday, Oct. 8.

Activities will include foliage and natural history hikes, fitness hikes, mountain bike clinics, and climbing and rappelling. These programs will be based in the Fork Run Recreation Area, a 550-acre nature preserve managed by ASCI and protected forever by conservation easements owned by the Maryland Environmental Trust. Instruction will be provided by Garrett College’s Adventure Sports-institute (ASI).

To take advantage of the fall colors, ASCI will offer fall foliage and natural history hikes in Fork Run on Oct. 8 and 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. ASI guides, many who have also taken classes through the college’s Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology (NRWT) program, will be educating the hikers on how to identify the various fall foliage trees, including a prized grove of rare American chestnuts. Additional highlights include Fork Run itself – a reproducing native trout habitat – and the 250-million-year-old boulders and cliffs in the Fork Run Recreation Area. The walking distance is up to two miles over easy to some moderate trail conditions. The cost is $25 per person.

For hikers wanting a more intense experience, “Fitness Hikes” will be offered every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon over a four-mile loop, including new single-track trails built in conjunction with Garrett Trails and through workforce development grants administered by Community Action.

“Great views and scenery with natural boulders and ledges add to the basic fitness value of hiking,” noted a spokesperson. “ASCI’s goal is to promote healthy and active outdoor lifestyles.”

The terrain is moderate to strenuous and runs throughout Fork Run. These hikes will be offered on Saturdays through Nov. 25. They cost $30 per person.

Rock climbing and rappelling will be offered Saturday afternoons from Oct. 8 to Nov. 19. This is a family activity in which each person works at his/her own level. Climbers must make reservations, and it costs $45 per person. ASCI outfits everyone with helmets, harness and climbing shoes.

World canoe, kayak races coming to Garrett

Deep Creek 2014 officials travel to Europe for event advice

MCHENRY — When the 2014 World Championship Canoe and Kayak Slalom Races come to the Adventure Sports Center International in Garrett County, organizers will use experience from their travel to Slovakia to observe this year’s event.

ASCI, in conjunction with USA Canoe and Kayak, was awarded the winning bid to host the premier event for Olympic whitewater canoe and kayak races earlier this year. ASCI competed with Poland and Austria for this designation. Following the award, Deep Creek 2014 LLC was created as a subsidiary of ASCI to act as the official host entity for the races.

Garrett County Commission Chairman Gregan Crawford will serve as co-chairman along with Terry Hasseltine of the Maryland Office of Sports Marketing, which recently helped organize the Grand Prix auto races in Baltimore. They were joined by Garrett County Economic Development Director Jim Hinebaugh, Susanne Nicolas of ASCI/Deep Creek 2014 and board member Bob Campbell of Whitewater Parks International of Boulder, Colo., on an eight-day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia, to observe the 2011 World Championship and Kayak Slalom Races.

The races in 2014 will mark 25 years since world championship canoe and kayak slalom races were held in the U.S. on Savage River near Bloomington.

Those races helped to generate more than $12 million economic benefit to the state and county. Throughout the event in Bratislava, the group’s credentials allowed for unprecedented access to all areas of the race venue including medical, judging, athlete village, video review, protest challenges, media sources and areas around the course typically off-limits to many event organizers. “This was quite a rewarding experience,” Crawford said.

The group representing Deep Creek 2014 had access to senior members of the International Canoe Federation, which sponsors the event, many of whom had participated in the 1989 World Championship. The ICF looks forward to expanding more into the U.S. marketplace and gaining greater exposure for its sport, and the county commissioners are willing to help them to achieve those goals when practical, according to County Administrator Monty Pagenhardt.

The commissioners are committed to building a long-term relationship with ICF as well as establishing new relationships with other paddle-sport disciplines such as sprint canoe and marathon canoe, Pagenhardt said in a news release. “The board is firmly committed to making the 2014 World Championship Canoe and Kayak Slalom Races a successful event.”

The county has appropriated $25,000 to Deep Creek 2014 to be administered by the Department of Economic Development. In addition, ASCI, Garrett County government and the state of Maryland will be placed on the international stage with such cities as Bratislava, Prague of the Czech Republic and London, which will play host of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Still water becomes Class IV rapids

Sunday, August 21, 2011

By Craig Meyer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Even in a sport like kayaking, where every course has its own distinct features and challenges, the ASCI complex in Deep Creek Lake, Md., is considered truly unique among the greater kayaking community.

Situated in mountainous western Maryland, the whitewater course at ASCI maintains the distinction of being the world’s only mountaintop whitewater course.

“There is nothing in the United States or even the world that is like this,” said ASCI business manager Sandy Bello.

ASCI, a not-for-profit organization formed to promote adventure tourism and healthy outdoor lifestyles, opened the whitewater course in 2007 and has taken over 45,000 people rafting and kayaking in that time.

Aug. 4, 2011

Competitors from around the region will compete in the first ever Maryland Canoe and Kayak State Championships at the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI), home to the world’s only mountaintop whitewater course, on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The championship is part of the 2011 Maryland Canoe and Kayak Series produced by the Bethesda Center of Excellence. BCE is marketed as the nation’s premier slalom canoe/kayak training center and is home to two-time Olympic silver medalist Dana Chladek. Chladek is the BCE head coach and will field a team of “young up and coming athletes” at the event.

The state championships will be a first glimpse of whitewater competition at ASCI since it was awarded the International Canoe Federation’s 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships. ASCI won out over bids from Austria and Poland at the April meeting of the ICF held in Paris.

“Deep Creek 2014,” the official title of the ICF 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships, is scheduled for September 17 through 21. The event will also mark the 25th anniversary of the highly successful 1989 Canoe Slalom World Championships held on the Savage River in Garrett County.

Canoe slalom refers to ‘decked’ or ‘covered’ whitewater boats which race a series of gates strategically placed over rapids. The four official Olympic disciplines are: single men and women’s kayak (where athletes sit in the boat and use a double bladed paddle) and single and double canoe (where athletes kneel in the boat and use a single bladed paddle).

Maryland has historically fielded the nation’s most successful slalom athletes, including world champions Jon Lugbill, Davey Hearn, Fritz and Lecky Haller, Cathy Hearn, Dana Chladek and Olympic gold medalist Joe Jacobi. Bill Endicott, who is heralded as the most successful canoe coach in U.S. history, is also based in Maryland. The Maryland State Championships will be the first and only state-level whitewater competition in the country.

The championships will take place on the upper section of the ASCI whitewater course. Each run will last around 100 seconds, and athletes will be required to navigate 20 gates while covering 300 meters of rapids.

>ASCI Receives $30K Grant For Adventure Education

Jun. 9, 2011

The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) was recently awarded a grant of $30,000 from the Naylor Foundation to support its adventure and environmental education programs with Garrett County public schools. The grant will supplement program and administration costs, and furthers a growing effort to reconnect local children with the outdoors.

Through one of these programs, Southern Middle School recently completed several rafting trips on the ASCI mountaintop whitewater course, which is located at the top of Wisp Resort. Some 160 sixth graders, teachers, and parents participated. For many of the students it was an introductory experience with whitewater rafting. Assisted by a guide, students navigated sections of the course with names like the “Dark Destroyer” and “Pinball Alley,” where they learned to paddle through drops and jump the raft off rocks.

While rafting, students also had the opportunity to meet with U.S. veterans who were visiting ASCI as part of the All-American Whitewater Festival. The veterans, who are members of Team River Runner, a Wounded Warrior organization, spoke to the middle school students about the lifelong thrill and therapeutic power associated with whitewater.

Through another of the ASCI sponsored programs, Southern Middle School seventh graders climbed and rappelled the rocks at the Fork Run Recreation Area. A 550-acre preserve, Fork Run is managed by ASCI and open to the general public. During their adventure, students ascended and descended the same cliffs that world famous climbers Lynn Hill, Will Gadd, and Hans Florine have recently visited.

At the event, students were instructed on how to “boulder” while climbing, and also on walking a “slackline,” which is a modified tightrope set very low to the ground.

Also through ASCI, local eighth graders undertook adventures in various locations. These consisted of rafting, biking, and hiking excursions at Ohiopyle State Park and kayaking and hiking trips in the Oakland area.

The eighth grade program is called “Discovery,” a spokesperson stated, because students are allowed to choose their own adventure and “discover for themselves the challenge and thrill of a particular adventure sport.”

After the Northern Middle School sixth grade group rafts at the mountaintop whitewater course this month, the total number of participants from Garrett County’s middle schools will total over 900 students. The trip will conclude the school’s first year in an ASCI program.

The weekend of May 14-15 will be the opening of whitewater fun at the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) atop Marsh Mountain in McHenry. To kick off the summer, ASCI is offering guided rafting for $25 per person, which includes a two-hour whitewater experience in a six-person raft with a professional guide, safety equipment, and instruction. Participants will also learn about other adventure opportunities at ASCI, including climbing and rappelling, geocaching, and mountain biking.

The opening weekend will provide an opportunity for local residents and visitors to experience the course that will be used for the 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2014. Several athletes from the U.S. National and Junior teams, including Olympian Scott Parsons, will be practicing on the course on Saturday, May 14. Another Community Day with the reduced rate for whitewater rafting will be May 27, when a 4 p.m. sunset rafting event and bonfire will kick off the second annual All-American Whitewater Festival. Then beginning Wednesday, June 22, every Wednesday during the summer will be a Community Day. Apr. 21, 2011

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has awarded the 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships to Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI), based in McHenry. Following presentations at its April 15 spring board meeting in Paris, ICF selected ASCI’s Deep Creek 2014: ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships bid over competing entries from Vienna, Austria, and Krakow, Poland.
The event, to be held September 16-21, 2014, will mark the 25th anniversary of the 1989 World Championships held on the Savage River in Garrett County and represents a return of world championship whitewater canoe and kayak racing to the United States for the first time since the 1989 event.

“Deep Creek and Garrett County deserved to win this bid,” said Matt Taylor, ASCI’s executive director and himself a two-time Olympic canoe racer. “Garrett County has done more than any other rural community in the U.S. to build infrastructure to host international-caliber whitewater events. We have a perfect whitewater venue for the return of the World Championships, and a historically significant date to celebrate the long heritage of whitewater paddling in the region. ASCI is very proud of its bid, and is grateful for the significant support it has received from local business leaders, Garrett County, the state of Maryland, and Maryland’s federal delegation.”

Letters of support were submitted from U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Benjamin Cardin, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Senator George Edwards, Delegate Wendell Beitzell, Maryland Sports marketing director Terry Hasseltine, the Garrett County commissioners, Garrett County Chamber of Commerce president Nicole Christian, Wisp Resort owner Karen Myers, and Garrett College president Richard MacLennan.

“The 2014 World Slalom Championship is a transformative sporting event for Garrett County that will place the county on a national and international stage over the next several years,” said Garrett County Commissioner Crawford, who accompanied Taylor to France this week to submit ASCI’s bid. “This momentous event reinforces the vision for ASCI, as well as allows Garrett County to showcase our region and other outdoor recreation activities. It will allow us to forge new relationships and opportunities with the competitive paddle-sport community that includes out-rigger canoe racing, dragon boat racing, marathon canoe racing, and sprint canoe, which is an Olympic discipline.”

He continued, “The county and state benefited economically from media coverage of the 1989 World Championship, and I’m confident that the 2014 World Slalom Championship will provide economic opportunities leading up to the event that will carry over beyond 2014. I’m excited and supportive of the possibilities that this event creates.”

The 1989 Worlds attracted more than 600 competitors representing 26 nations. More than 40,000 spectators attended racing events and the opening ceremonies.

ASCI’s Deep Creek 2014 bid was submitted at the end of February and was reviewed in March by the ICF Slalom Committee. It received high marks by the committee and was formally accepted as the recommended bid, but the committee members stressed the need for a high-level delegation to make a personal presentation of the bid at the Paris board meeting. The presentation was given by Joe Jacobi, CEO of U.S.A. Canoe/Kayak; Commissioner Crawford; Taylor; and Suzanne Nicolas, ASCI’s event coordinator.
