Wild & Wonderful Wednesday: Whitewater Rafting At ASCI

MCHENRY, MD. –

The grand finale of our weekly summer series ‘Wild and Wonderful Wednesday’ brought us to the ASCI Whitewater Course in McHenry, Maryland. The USA Kayak and Canoe team held its time trials on the exact same course back in May.

“Welcome to the ASCI Whitewater course here in McHenry, Maryland,” Michael Logsdon, ASCI Executive Director said. “What you’re about to experience today is some class three or four Whitewater. We have about a one-third of a mile Whitewater course that drops about 24 vertical feet. So that puts it pretty high on the challenge level in terms of meeting the rapids.”

First it was the water shoes, and then the life jackets.

When you are doing anything like this, safety is always first. The helmets are extremely important prior to going out on the water. But ASCI goes one step beyond a simple helmet. They offer a helmet with a Go Pro camera on top. The Go Pro is a revolutionary camera that serves as a ‘head cam’ of sorts, while you navigate your way through the rapids. At the end of the course, ASCI puts a video together for you and your family to have, serving as a memory for years to come. Helmets with the Go Pro camera are offered at $25.

Adventuresports Institute Awarded $250,000 Grant

Jul. 4, 2013

U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) announced last Friday that the Garrett County Board of Commissioners has received a $250,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to improve the educational facilities of the Adventuresports Institute (ASI) of Garrett College.

In addition to the grant, the project will be locally funded at $279,024 and with an additional $50,000 in other federal funds.

“Tourism means jobs in western Maryland and across our great state,” Cardin said. “This grant is about equipping young professionals with the important skills they need to showcase the splendor of western Maryland’s natural resources. ARC’s federal-local partnership is investing together in Garrett County’s economy, while raising the bar for new levels of responsible, environmental stewardship.”

The Adventuresports Institute is a wholly owned operation of Garrett College. It was founded as part of a strategy to establish Garrett County as an adventure sport tourism leader. The area’s distinctive four-season climate and diverse geology are supportive of adventure recreation activities.

ASI works with public and private entities to train professionals and produce leaders in adventure sports and recreation industries who have a strong sense of environmental stewardship and community service.

“This federal funding is an important investment in Garrett County’s economic security and the vitality of Western Maryland,” said Mikulski. “These funds will help build an industry that keeps Marylanders on the job and encourages people to visit our state. Tourism spurs all parts of the economy – from the adventure sites to the food stands. I will keep fighting for smart federal investments in Maryland communities.”

She added that this grant comes at an opportune time as its beneficiaries will be instrumental in ensuring that the International Canoe Federation’s Canoe Slalom World Championship in 2014 at Deep Creek Lake is a success.

Cardin is chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, and Mikulski is chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee.

USACK Trials Put Olympian And GC Residents In Same Waters

The 2013 U.S. Canoe/Kayak Team Trials and Deep Creek Open were held at the ASCI whitewater course in McHenry this past weekend. The event hosted several of the best paddlers from around the world, including two-time Olympian Casey Eichfeld (above) and Garrett County resident Casey Beall (below). Eichfeld of Drums, Pa., grabbed a spot on the U.S. World Cup Team after seizing first place in men’s single canoe, and paired with Devin McEwan to grab the gold in men’s double canoe as well. Eichfeld’s penalty-free first run was 1.48 seconds faster than five-time Olympic medalist Michal Martikan of Slovakia. Beall is currently a student at Garrett College, and works at ASCI and Precision Rafting in Friendsville. His grandmother, Mary Walcek, has been a Garrett County resident of over 20 years. While Beall did not meet the standards to earn a spot on the Under-23 U.S. Team, he did qualify for the Under-23 World Championships. More here.

Canoe Kayak Slalom trials are one of many big events coming to Deep Creek Lake

By Don Markus, The Baltimore Sun2:15 p.m. EDT, May 11, 2013

Once thought to be a somewhat out-of-the-way spot for winter ski trips and summer getaways from the scorching heat, Deep Creek Lake and the adjacent Wisp Resort could become “the No. 1 — bar none — adventure sports destination spot in the world” if Todd Copley has anything to do with it.

Toward that goal, Copley’s Deep Creek 2014 LLC will be helping run next weekend’s USA Canoe Kayak Slalom Team Trials there, as well as the sport’s world championships in 2014, marking the first time the championships will be held in Maryland since Garrett County hosted on the Savage River in 1989.

There are other adventure sports competitions scheduled for the area throughout the coming year.

The USA Canoe Kayak Team Trials will be held Friday through Sunday, with a still to be determined number of finishers qualifying for spots on the 2013 World Cup team for the men’s Canoe 1 and 2, men’s Kayak 1 and 2 and the women’s Canoe 1 and 2. (The number designates how many competitors are in the canoe or kayak.)

Oakland, Maryland (PRWEB) April 19, 2013

The Garrett County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce Maryland’s legislative approval of a one million dollar State Bond submitted by the county’s elected representatives to support the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) and its preparation to host the 2014 International Canoe Federation’s (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Championships. The event, to be held September 16 – 21, 2014 will bring competitors and spectators from around the world to Garrett County.

The ICF awarded the 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships to ASCI following presentations at its April 2011 board meeting in Paris, France. The ICF selected ASCI’s “Deep Creek 2014: ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships” bid over competing entries from Vienna, Austria and Krakow, Poland. ICF 2013 Championships are being held in Prague, Czech Republic; the 2015 ICF Championships are being held in London, United Kingdom.

“Hosting this international event is a big honor for Garrett County and for the western Maryland district,” commented Maryland State Senator and State Bond Bill co-sponsor George Edwards. “I am confident that this funding will be well-used, and that the event will have an significant, long-term, and positive impact on regional economic development.”
