Park Quest 2011: Four down, and only 20 to go

Four parks down, 20 to go on my marathon Park Quest 24/7 to complete the challenges at 24 state parks — from Garrett County to the Atlantic Ocean in seven days.

So far, I’ve hiked following compass bearings to answer questions, paddled a canoe while staying on a GPS-set course, found letterboxes that taught me about natural resources and history and hiked to a cemetery, an aviary and a dam.

I’m sitting on the veranda at Rocky Gap State Park, enjoying a freshening breeze — don’t worry, it’s heading your way, Baltimore.

>$10,000 rockfish awaits a lucky angler

>State kicks off annual hunt for ‘Diamond Jim’

By PAMELA WOOD, Staff Writer

Capital Gazette Communications Published 06/01/11

If you get one

•Tagged rockfish: Do not remove tag. Keep the fish and call the number on the tag so a state official can come and verify your catch. Your fish could be Diamond Jim, worth at least $10,000, or an imposter worth at least $500.

•Citation-worthy fish or crab: You can check in your catch at a number of fishing and sports shops around the state. For a full list of citation sizes and locations of citation award centers, and full rules of the contest, visit the Diamond Jim website at www.dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/challenge.

Fishing could be quite a profitable hobby this summer.

The state launched its seventh annual Maryland Fishing Challenge yesterday, and once again, there are tagged “Diamond Jim” rockfish swimming around the Chesapeake Bay worth up to $10,000.

Eight boats ferried Department of Natural Resources biologists around the bay yesterday as they caught and tagged 200 rockfish.

“We’re not trying to make this a reason to go fishing, it just makes it more fun,” said Marty Gary, a DNR fisheries ecologist who runs the contest.

1) A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.

2) Turtles can breathe through their butts.

3) Butterflies taste with their feet.

4) Paddling into a stiff head wind on Deep Creek Lake without Ranger Mark Spurrier in the stern providing the muscle is a futile exercise that is likely to result in negative mph.

I learned the first three facts from a poster in the Discovery Center bathroom at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

ACCIDENT, Md. — U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski is sharing ideas for improving rural education during a visit to far western Maryland.

The Maryland Democrat meets Wednesday in Accident with Garrett County educators, parents and students. The visit follows a similar meeting Tuesday in Allegany County.

Mikulski sits on the Senate Rural Education Caucus. She also chairs a subcommittee that she says will play a major role in rewriting the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

>Borrowers unhappy with Obama mortgage plan: study

>WASHINGTON | Thu May 26, 2011 5:25pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Struggling homeowners seeking help from the Obama administration’s foreclosure prevention program have in many cases had negative experiences, a congressional report said on Thursday.

Three-fourths of the some 400 housing counselors involved in the process characterized borrowers’ overall experience with the housing program as “negative” or “very negative,” according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) study.

According to the study, 40 percent of approximately 300 counselors said they had experienced difficulties working with the mortgage servicers and said paperwork had been lost or needed to be resubmitted.

The Treasury Department defended its actions, noting that the survey was conducted in October 2010 before improvements were made.

>Deep Creek Lake gets 'incomplete' on health check

>A checkup performed by University of Maryland scientists finds Deep Creek Lake appears to be generally healthy. But researchers say there’s not enough monitoring done of the popular western Maryland tourist attraction to tell what shape it’s really in – or how much trouble it may be having with harmful aglal blooms, polluted runoff or other symptoms of the growth of vacationers and vacation homes at the mountain resort.

So a year after concerns were voiced about the 3,900-acre manmade lake as it experienced its largest recorded fish kill, the first-ever assessment of the lake comes back with an “incomplete” on its ecological report card.

Basic water quality in the lake seemed to be good, and bacteria levels did not appear to pose a health risk for swimming, according to the report by EcoCheck, a partnership between UM’s Center for Environmental Science and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The group was commissioned to produce a report card on the lake last year by Friends of Deep Creek Lake, a citizen’s watchdog group. It’s raised concerns about water quality being affected by polluted runoff from farms and vacation homes, leaking septic tanks and shoreline erosion. Adding to the anxiety was a prolonged fish kill last summer, in which an estimated 2,000 walleye, perch and a range of other species went belly up from late July into September.

>First stop on Park Quest 2011 – Outdoors Girl

Beautiful start to my state park marathon: 24 state parks in seven days, going west to east. It’s only 65 degrees right now at Herrington Manor State Park. But humidity is hanging like damp cheesecloth over the 53-acre lake.

Some folks are out fishing early and the park manager, Lieutenant Al Preston is sprucing up the grounds around the lake house.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Home prices hit another new low in the first quarter, down 5.1% from a year ago to levels not reached since 2002.

It was the third straight quarterly drop for the S&P/Case-Shiller national home price index, which was released Tuesday.

Prices are now down 32.7% from their peak set five years ago.

“Home prices continue on their downward spiral with no relief in sight,” said David Blitzer, spokesman for Standard and Poor’s.

The index covers 80% of the housing market, and this month’s report confirmed “a double-dip in home prices across much of the nation,” said Blitzer.
