CUMBERLAND — Area residents who have original Civil War manuscripts and photographs will have the chance to preserve them with the help of the Western Maryland Regional Library.

A Civil War in Your Attic event will be held Aug. 6 and 8 at the Allegany College of Maryland Library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make an appointment, call Jill Craig at 301-739-3250, Ext. 142 or email jcraig@washcolibrary.org. A limited number of walk-ins will be accommodated, as scheduling allows.

The Maryland History and Culture Collaborative and the Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage have partnered in a state-wide effort to locate, scan and provide online access to these documents. The Civil War in Your Attic: Preserving the Legacy of Maryland will provide an opportunity to have historic letters, diaries and other collections scanned. The project will scan manuscript materials and photographs created during the period 1859 to 1867 that reflect the social, political, military, business and religious life in Maryland during the period of the Civil War and the early period of Reconstruction.

Scanned materials will be made available on the Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage website, www.mdch.org/civilwar. If requested, the owners will be provided a copy of their materials on disk. They may also choose to be acknowledged online or to remain anonymous.

Western Maryland Regional Library is an organization that provides support and materials for the continued enhancement of resources available through the Allegany County Library System, the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County and the Washington County Free Library System.

>McHenry Business Park due electrical upgrade

>Garrett County hopes to attract ‘high-power’ users
From Staff Reports
The Cumberland Times-News
Sun Jun 19, 2011, 11:26 PM EDT

MCHENRY — Garrett County hopes to attract “high-power” users to its McHenry Business Park by extending power lines there, according to an announcement of a $107,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant.

U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski made the grant announcement, which also included $73,000 for Hagerstown Community College.

The electrical upgrade to the business park will be a plus for technology-based and small-component businesses. The county will provide $107,000, bringing the total project funding to $214,000, according to the announcement. Officials expect to serve 10 businesses and create 50 new jobs.

“These grants will bring new jobs and strengthen educational opportunities in Western Maryland,” Cardin said. “The funding for McHenry Business Park will strengthen Garrett County’s economy by bringing high-tech businesses and jobs to the community. The grant to Hagerstown Community College will help give students the education and training they need to succeed in today’s work force.”

“These funds will help the region build the infrastructure and the work force it needs to attract new high-tech businesses, jobs and economic development to Western Maryland,” Mikulski said. “I will continue to fight for federal grants like these that invest in Maryland communities and future economic opportunities.”

Hagerstown Community College will use its grant, which also requires the college of match funds, to purchase equipment for its Digital Instrumentation & Process Control project. The project will provide students with hands-on training using software, laboratory equipment and other materials.

Fireworks will light up the sky this Fourth of July during the annual “Fire on the Mountain” at Deep Creek Lake, presented by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.
The display will begin at dark on Monday, July 4. The rain date is July 5. The fireworks will be launched from the top of Bear Claw Tubing Park at Wisp Resort. Hugh Umbel Companies is the major sponsor for the 2011 display. The companies include Bear Creek Traders, Deep Creek Foodland Fresh, Legacy Home Corporation, McHenry Beverage Shoppe, and Perkins Restaurant & Bakery.

Chamber president/CEO Nicole Christian expressed her appreciation to the companies for their continued sponsorship of Fire on the Mountain.

“We could not present such a fabulous show without the support of Hugh Umbel Companies and our other generous sponsors, including Wisp Resort, our associate sponsor, and the Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake, a supporting sponsor,” Christian said.

Additional supporters include special sponsors Bill’s Marine Service and Garrett Container Systems, and sponsors Beitzel Corporation, Double G RV Park, Glotfelty Enterprises, Lake Pointe Inn, First United Bank & Trust, Pillar Innovations, Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, and Susquehanna Bank.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Interested business owners may call Sarah Duck, GC Chamber of Commerce, at 301-387-8746.

A unique biking event gaining international attention as one of the most challenging courses in the world will take place in Garrett County on June 25. The “Win the Fight” Garrett County Gran Fondo, organized by the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, producers of the acclaimed SavageMan Triathlon Festival, will get under way that day, and is bringing more than 500 participating bikers to the area.

This ride is not a race, organizers stress, but is a challenge offered to bikers well as an opportunity given to them to raise money to support the fight against skin cancer. The event offers four different routes for bikers of all levels, with the courses designed by SavageMan course architect Kyle Yost.

“The ‘Gran Fondo’ is a celebrated tradition in Italian cycling culture,” said Greg Safko, president of the Nicolay foundation. “A Gran Fondo is a long distance, mass-participation cycling event – not a race – that welcomes professional, amateur, and recreational cyclists of all abilities. The Garrett County Gran Fondo offers four supported ride options with staggered 7 a.m.+ starts and ending at the Adventure Sports Center International.”

The four rides are as follows, described by Yost and Safko:

“Diabolical Double.” At 125 miles and 16,500 feet of climbing, this ride is an extreme challenge on par with any single day ride in the world and already an epic North American ride.

“Savage Century.” A worthy epic ride in its own right at 102 miles and 12,700 feet of climbing, sharing the initial 59 and final 15 miles with the Diabolical Double.

“Masochistic Metric.” A beautiful 62-mile ride that highlights the beauty of rural Garrett County. It’s not nearly as extreme as the Double or Century, but does include 8,000 feet of climbing, and is “no walk in the park.”

“Garrett’s Greatest 25.” A beautiful 25-mile and 2,800-feet ride, through the rolling Garrett County farmland, with a sprinkling of modest climbs.

Cyclists may still register for the ride. The event’s web site, located at www.winthefight.org/granfondo, provides the information necessary to learn more regarding the actual courses, as well as for spectators to determine best viewing options. Cyclists are asked to raise funds for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation with the event, and those who bring in $300 or more will be awarded an exclusive Gran Fondo bike jersey; while participants raising $1,000 or more will be given the jersey as well as a Garmin Edge 500 GPS bike computer with the Gran Fondo routes pre-loaded and one ticket for the “Champion” fundraiser grand prize raffle. An additional raffle ticket is earned for every $100 raised above $1,000. The grand prize of the raffle is the use of a luxury Deep Creek Lake rental home for a future weekend, courtesy of Railey Mountain Lake Vacations.

This event was noted in the July issue of Triathlete magazine, inviting avid bikers to take part in a course that is far more than “your typical Saturday morning work-out.”

>Project will link schools, hospitals and more across state
by Alan Brody, Staff Writer

ELKRIDGE Declaring broadband Internet access essential for private sector growth and to link schools, hospitals and other institutions across Maryland, federal, state and local elected officials gathered at a Howard County warehouse this week to formally celebrate a milestone in the years-long effort to extend high-speed service to rural communities….

…In addition to the federal money, Maryland has pledged to chip in $32 million to the effort.

Once it is completed, the fiber-optic network will link more than 1,000 schools, libraries, public safety agencies and other facilities, spanning 4,200 square miles across Maryland, and linking the Wallops Island (Va.) NASA facility on the Delmarva Peninsula to the far reaches of Garrett County in Western Maryland. The alliance includes 715 of the to-be-connected institutions.
