Best-selling author Martha Grimes was the guest of honor at a special program presented by the Mayor and Town Council of Mountain Lake Park Saturday afternoon. In front of a standing-room-only crowd in the town hall, Grimes spoke about the characters and locations in her four-book series that center on the town, and more specifically on the Mountain Lake Park Hotel during its heyday years of operation. The main character in those books is 12-year-old Emma Brown, whose mother was a co-owner of the hotel, as was the case with Grimes’ mother in real life. “Emma is indeed autobiographical; however, she represents not the person I was, but the person I would have liked to have been at that age,” Grimes said. Grimes is best known internationally for her 22-novel Richard Jury mystery series, one book of which garnered her the coveted Nero Wolfe Award for Best Mystery of the Year. The Mayor and Town Council presented to her an original painting of the Mountain Lake Park Hotel, partially visible in the photo above, and also unveiled a permanent historical plaque featuring her and her books that will be placed on an exhibit stand in front of the town hall facing the former MLP Hotel property. Holding the plaque in the photo above are town council member Don Sincell and Mayor Leo Martin (far right). Also in the photo with Ms. Grimes is Kathryn Sincell-Corwell, far left, who coordinated the Martha Grimes Day event and also arranged for the painting of the hotel. Following the program, Grimes signed copies of her books for scores of interested readers. A resident of the Washington, D.C., area, Grimes was accompanied by her son Kent, daughter-in-law Travis, and two grandsons. Photo by John McEwen.

Natural Resources Careers Conference accepting applications from teens By Carrie Ann Knauer, Times Staff Writer Carroll County Times | 0 comments

Natalie Crabbs was going into her senior year at Francis Scott Key High School in 1998 when she signed up for the Natural Resources Careers Conference.

The week-long camp, held in Western Maryland, gave her a glimpse of what it would be like to work in natural resources, and specifically in forestry.

“I had always wanted to do some type of job in natural resources at that time,” she said, so she was very enthused when she was accepted to the program….

>Close encounters with bears

>By GREG PECK ( Contact ) Thursday, June 23, 2011 – 9:21 a.m. EMAIL RSS SHARE I’ve seen lots of bears in the wild during my travels, particularly while fishing in Canada. Once a bear ravaged a bag of garbage we unwittingly set outside a cabin before nightfall. We’ve seen several bears, including one swimming, while we fished from a boat. We once even made an evening trip to a dump to watch bears dine on garbage. One time, while fishing on a lake northeast of Eau Claire, we spotted a bear strolling around the homes and cottages one evening….

The next day, while we relaxed on the upper deck of our friends’ house on Deep Creek Lake, I spotted a bear roaming around the neighbor’s home. The bear strolled down to the water, took a brief, refreshing dip, and soon wandered off—but not before I again shot a few photos….

Garrett County residents are advised to watch for cyclists on numerous county roadways this Saturday, June 25, for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation’s second annual Win the Fight Garrett County Gran Fondo.

Bicyclists will ride on a variety of roads, specifically the Rt. 219 area north of Accident to Keyser’s Ridge. Bikers will be traveling south from Devil’s Half Acre Road and make their way 1.9 miles south to a left turn on to Rabbit Hollow Road. Maryland State Police will maintain a presence to slow traffic as cyclists make this turn. This will not disrupt the flow of traffic.

The charity ride supports melanoma skin cancer research, education, and advocacy. All county roads will remain open to traffic; however, motorists are asked to be aware of riders. Bike routes are available on the charity ride web site www.winthefight.org/granfondo

The Peabody Ragtime Ensemble of Baltimore will present “An evening of Ragtime, Dixieland, and All That Jazz!” in the Garrett College auditorium this Saturday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is being sponsored by the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF). The Ensemble, an acoustic “little big band,” preserves the roots of American jazz through performance of vintage repertoire in concert, dance, and stage settings. “For more than 30 years, Peabody Ragtime Ensemble has been filling concert halls and bringing audiences to their feet with their infectious brand of delightfully diverse repertoire,” stated one critic. The Washington Post said that they “blew up a hurricane” with their “lively and polished program that covered the spectrum….” Tickets are $25 for adults, $7 for students, and admission is free for youth age 5 and younger, though a ticket is required. For reservations, persons are invited to telephone the GLAF office at 301-387-3082 or go to its web site at: www.artsandentertainment.org. GLAF is partially supported by grants from the Garrett County Arts Council, the Maryland State Arts Council, Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, the William Penn Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Pew Charitable Trust.

>Stay dry

>It’s illegal and unsafe to go boating and drinking
Anonymous
The Cumberland Times-News Thu Jun 23, 2011, 09:26 PM EDT

There may be people who actually believe that while it’s inadvisable to drink and drive an automobile, it’s OK to drink and operate a boat.

Well, it’s not.

Not only is it illegal to operate a boat while under the influence, it’s dangerous. In Maryland, alcohol and illegal drug use were contributing factors in 8 percent of the state’s 219 reportable boating accidents during 2010. In 2009, alcohol contributed to 16 percent of boating fatalities nationwide.

Warm weather brings the boating season, and Maryland Natural Resources Police recently charged a Pennsylvania man with operating a vessel under the influence on Deep Creek Lake.

Just as police are on the lookout for drunken drivers, they’re also trying to keep the boating public safe from drunken boat operators.

Today through Sunday, Maryland’s Natural Resources Police will be participating in the nationally coordinated Operation Dry Water, in which officials across America — including the U.S. Coast Guard — will be trying to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking in a boating environment.

The situation becomes even worse in waters that are comparatively crowded, like those of Deep Creek Lake.

Also, NRP officials say, boaters are subject to increased fatigue from sun, wind and water, and alcohol use magnifies this fatigue and impairs judgment and can can lead to arrest, accidents and death. The maximum penalty for operating a boat while impaired by alcohol is a $1,000 fine and a year in jail for first offenders.

As NRP says: Boat safe, boat smart and boat sober

>Reward offered for killer of rare goshawk

>Published: June 22, 2011 at 7:45 PM

Comments (0)EmailPrintListen BALTIMORE, June 22 (UPI) — Someone has fatally shot Maryland’s rarest bird, and a sportsmen’s foundation says it’s offering a reward for information leading to their arrest.

Natural Resources Police say an unknown person or persons in Garrett County shot and killed the uncommon female northern goshawk and her three nesting chicks and did so outside any legal hunting season.

The bird is on the state’s endangered species list, and its nest near Savage River State Forest was being watched closely by federal Department of Natural Resources biologists due to the bird’s “highly rare” status, The Baltimore Sun reported.
