>Thunder Moon on the rise

>(SUN PHOTO: Karl Merton Ferron, 2011)

The moon is full tonight. As the first full moon since the summer solstice, it’s known to some as the Hay Moon or the Thunder Moon, for reasons that seem clear enough. It’s officially full at 2:38 a.m. EDT – on Friday morning. Moonrise for Baltimore this evening is at 8:06 p.m. EDT. If you’re out on the beaches tonight, look for Luna to peek over the horizon at 7:58 p.m. Out at Deep Creek Lake, you’ll have to wait until at least 8:18 p.m. to see the Thunder Moon rise.

>Maryland Clean Marinas Program is Looking for the Cleanest

>The Cleanest Marina contest is an initiative to get more marinas on board with clean marina practices.

By Mitchelle Stephenson
July 13, 2011

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has had an ongoing certification program for marinas that voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices. Since 2009, a total of 120 marinas in Maryland are on the list of certified clean marinas. Of those, 18 are in south county. That represents about 25 percent of the 600 marinas in the state.

In order to get more marinas on board with the clean marina initiative, the DNR is having a contest this year for the cleanest marina. A copy of the rules are attached to this story. The winner will be selected in January 2012.

Award Criteria includes:

•Overall cleanliness of the facility (indoors and outdoors);
•Environmental services offered (e.g., recycling liquid and/or solid waste, reliable pump-outs, vacuum sanders, pet waste pick up bags, absorbent pads at the fuel dock, etc.);
•Communicating and enforcing “clean marina” practices and goals to customers and contractors through rules, signs, and services.
The Maryland Clean Marina Initiative recognizes and promotes marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs of any size that meet legal requirements and voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices. Boaters are encouraged to patronize certified clean marinas and to adopt clean boating habits.

The DNR hopes that the collective effort of individuals and businesses will improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, coastal byways and inland lakes like Deep Creek Lake.

After 26 years in Frederick, Dutch’s Daughter restaurant has expanded to Deep Creek Lake in Oakland. Dutch’s Daughter at Silver Tree opened Friday and has been busy ever since, co-owner Ilene Gideon said.

The new restaurant occupies the eatery section of the former Silver Tree Inn.

Gideon’s decision to open the restaurant in Oakland was prompted by the fact that she was born in the area and the climate there.

“I also wanted to find a place that was cooler than Frederick in the summer and two very good friends of mine for many years, Phil and Erica Rauch, bought the place and we moved in,” Gideon said. “Our intention is to buy the place from them in five years. We had dinner here 10 years ago and loved it.”

>MD author explores Eastern "ancient" forests

>

When we talk about old-growth and virgin forests, we often think of the massive redwoods and sequoias out West. The eastern United States was heavily logged in the 19th and early 20th centuries, so that the trees we see in this part of the country today are relative youngsters – decades rather than centuries old.

But not everywhere. Remnants remain of the forests that practically blanketed the East when European settlers arrived. Some are on steep slopes, in deep ravines or other remote, hard-to-reach places. Others are relatively easy to get to.

One’s right here in Maryland – about 40 majestic acres of largely untouched eastern hemlocks and white pines at Swallow Falls State Park, near Oakland in Garrett County.

Joan Maloof, a biology professor at Salisbury University, has made a career of studying trees and forests. She’s passionate about old growth and is working now to develop a network for protecting them. She’s written a first-person guide to some of these overlooked pockets of biodiversity and wonder.
