Police disarm, arrest Garrett County man

GRANTSVILLE — A Grantsville man armed with a loaded rifle was arrested without incident early Tuesday when he charged at Garrett County sheriff’s deputies outside his residence on Bill Beitzel Road.

After being taken into custody, Jason Ray Beitzel, 27, was taken to Garrett Memorial Hospital for mental evaluation prior to being released to the custody of the sheriff’s office for arrest processing.

Charged with reckless en-dangerment, and first- and second-degree assault, Beitzel remained in custody late Tuesday morning awaiting further evaluation by medical personnel and a bond hearing by a district court commissioner.

Shortly after 1 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of Bill Beitzel Road in reference to a “mental subject.”

Upon arrival, deputies found Beitzel sitting inside his residence where he was armed with a rifle. He then walked toward the officers, failing to comply with commands to drop the weapon. Beitzel then reportedly loaded one round into the rifle and continued toward the deputies in an aggressive manner before he was subdued by deputies and taken into custody, according to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said no one was injured in the incident.

These varying hues of pink, yellow, green, and purple are most pleasing to the human eye, at least most would agree, and the Mountaintop is no where lacking in such colors. August marks the time when plants mature, coming to their full potential, whether it be to please the eye, or to feed a hungry mouth. Sweet corn on the cob is being sold across the county, as are tomatoes and melons and squash, among many other tasty and healthful foods. FireFly Farms Earns Blue Ribbon For Bleu Goat Cheese

Firefly Farms, producer of goat cheeses from Maryland’s Allegheny Plateau, has earned a top honor at this year’s American Cheese Society’s annual conference, which was held in Montreal, Canada.

FireFly’s aged goat cheese, Mountain Top Bleu, received the first place ribbon, beating out numerous other blue-veined goat cheeses. The ribbon marked the 14th individual honor received by Mountain Top Bleu, which has been recognized by Saveur Magazine as one of its 50 favorite American cheeses.

“This is the 44th individual award for our FireFly Farms product line,” explained Matt Cedro, head cheese maker.

“It always feels great to have our work recognized on the national stage. We are very proud of all our cheeses and to receive this type of recognition is wonderful.”

“It all began nearly 10 years ago with a first-place ribbon for Mountain Top Bleu at the ACS in 2002,” added Mike Kock, FireFly Farms president.

“As we move our creamery to Accident and prepare to expand our business, it’s greatly fulfilling that Mountain Top Bleu has remained America’s best.”

Paddlers Compete At Championships

Maryland Holds First State Paddling Match

MCHENRY, Md. — Canoeists and kayakers are competing in Maryland’s first state paddling championships in McHenry.

Organizers of the event at Adventure Sports Center International overlooking Deep Creek Lake said the slalom races were held on the upper section of the center’s whitewater course. The mountaintop sports center is hosting the International Canoe Federation’s canoe slalom world championships in 2014.

THIS IS the third in a three-part series about day trips.

Traveling has become something of a ritual in responsibility for me. It seems I can’t go farther than the grocery store without a Garmin to guide me and a multitude of itineraries, back-up plans and emergency contacts in tow.

There was a time, about five years ago, when I traveled across the Atlantic, canceled my flight back home and happily roamed foreign lands months longer than expected — with not a checklist in site.

I don’t know what kind of voodoo magic burgeoning adulthood cast on me between now and then that makes planning out possible ventures on Google Maps’ street-view a requirement, but I aim to change it.

With that in mind, I decided to pick a place for my day trip and plan little else.

After a chat with my friend, I settled on the Deep Creek Lake area in Garrett County, Md. Not exactly a trek across the Amazon, true, but you gotta start somewhere. And a beautiful lake, only an hour away, with some of the easiest directions I’ve ever encountered, seemed a perfect first step.

July 2011 Real Estate Market Update – Residential

24 homes sold in the month of July 2011 at Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County. Compared to last July, we were only 2 sales short. We are only down one transaction from June 2011 – overall, I think that’s great. I believe that the vacation rental market trending down over the month of June in the past few years has an effect on the July sales numbers. If people aren’t here on vacation, they aren’t buying homes. Same thing for primary residential homes – kids are in school, sports & activities later and later every year. Of course, the market is changing, too. But, people are still buying real estate at Deep Creek Lake & in Garrett County.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the stats:

There are 64 homes under contract right now (56 last month).

The average list vs. ORIGINAL sales price was 88.25% – UP a whopping 6.5% from last month (81.77%).

The ADJUSTED list vs sale price was 91.58%, up more than 3% from last month (88.28%).

The current # of active/for sale listings in MRIS (minus timeshares) is 810, up from last months 780. We have a 33.75 month supply of homes available (minus timeshares) based solely on the July sales numbers. This number is up from last month’s 31 month supply.

Random observations:

•3 ‘newer’ homes sold in July (5 years old or less)

•It appears that 17 or so of these sales were vacation homes

•13 homes sold under $300,000 (last month was 13)

•13 homes sold under $400,000

•2 homes sold over $ 1 million (5 homes last month)

•2 homes sold for higher than full price or at full price (last month was 2)

•One house sold for 68.92% of asking price – 122 Sand Spring Rd

•The oldest home that sold was 74 yrs old

•The average age of the homes that sold was 23 years (23 last month)

•5 condo/townhouse properties sold (1 last month)

Outdoors Girl: End of the trail

So this is it. The last Outdoors Girl post.

I’m heading off for the family’s annual striped bass and bluefish fishing vacation on Chappaquiddick Island and when I return after Labor Day it will be to a desk on the Metro staff, where my Sun career started 23 years ago.

What a great 11 1/2-year romp through the outdoors. What an honor to follow in the footsteps of Rachel Carson, who had this job in the 1930s, fly fishing guru Lefty Kreh and Maryland outdoors editor emeritus Bill Burton. What a pleasure to meet and talk with you on the trails and on the water.

Thanks one and all. And thanks to my editors, who didn’t always get where I was going, but had the courage and sense of fun to say, “OK.”

Affordable rentals tough to come by in state

Maryland among least-affordable states; waiting lists for housing vouchers boast thousands of applicants

As a senior information specialist working for the Department of Health and Human Services, Christina Bradshaw has what a housing official called a “good job.”

Yet, Bradshaw said after a divorce she faced the choice of living in a community she could afford or one that was a good environment for her three kids.

Bradshaw wanted to continue living in the house she rents in Silver Spring, a challenge given that in Maryland the average hourly wage needed to pay for a modest two-bedroom apartment is $24.76. That’s the fourth-highest figure in the nation, behind Hawaii, the District of Columbia (at $28.10) and California, according to “Out of Reach 2011,” the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s latest report on obstacles that low-wage workers face in their search for housing.
